Description of Services

The Head Coach reports directly to the Director of Athletics, the Head of School, and the Athletic Coordinator. The Head Coach is responsible for ensuring that athletics are an integral part of the Boston Public Schools program, safeguarding educational principles, and advancing the goals of the athletic department.

Responsibilities

• Model the behaviors outlined in the National Federation of Coaches Code of Ethics, emphasizing sportsmanship.
• Exercise full control of the team regarding coaching and athletic discipline.
• Implement BPS Athletic Department policies, Boston Public Schools policies, and team rules.
• Maintain knowledge of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Handbook and the student handbooks.
• Supervise and delegate responsibilities for all paid and volunteer assistant coaches.
• Attend all athletic department and school-level meetings that concern the sport coached.
• Stay informed of rule changes, trends, and recommendations affecting the sport.
• Develop and implement a coaching philosophy, training methodologies, and a written practice plan that includes warm‑up and cool‑down procedures.
• Be present at all practices and competitions, providing supervision of weight rooms, locker rooms, and shower areas before and after sessions.
• Scout future opponents, develop a game plan, and prepare the team for competition.
• Ensure facilities and equipment are safe and that safety procedures are taught and followed.
• Review and assist with the processing of medical forms, parent consent forms, eligibility reports, and progress reports.
• Promote the importance of academics and collaborate with partners to support student grades.
• Engage community members to encourage youth participation in high‑school sports.
• Outreach to athletes’ parents and develop a supportive coaching approach.
• Supervise squad members at home and away contests and when transported by school buses.
• Manage distribution, collection, and inventory of athletic equipment before, during, and after the season.
• Communicate and report game results to the media and Athletic Director; submit site sheets immediately after contests.
• Identify and nominate deserving students for district, local, and state awards.
• Assist student‑athletes in securing financial aid or college scholarships based on athletics and leadership.
• Maintain current knowledge of NCAA and NAIA rules and recruiting regulations.
• Perform other duties assigned by the Principal/Headmaster or Director of Athletics.

Minimum Requirements

• High‑school degree required.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution preferred.
• Previous successful playing and/or coaching experience required.
• Current CPR, First Aid, and Concussion certifications; fulfillment of MIAA Coaches Education requirements.
• Successful completion of the CORI.
• Membership in a state and/or national coaches association preferred.
