Job summary

Amtrak is seeking an DT Network Intern to join the Network Infrastructure Services team. You will help install network infrastructure, explore Wi‑Fi/RF technologies, and use BI/AI to build tools that advance network engineering.

You will participate in developing network topologies for stations, prepare BOMs, and craft requirements and test cases to meet scope, schedule, and budget. This is an onsite internship based in Washington, DC with flexible hours.

Qualifications

  • Actively pursuing a degree in Networking Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Telecommunications Engineering.
  • At least 2 years of undergraduate studies completed or junior status.
  • GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Basic understanding of network protocols and RF/wireless technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills.
  • Able to work a minimum of 16 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and participate in installation of network infrastructure (switches, WAPs, monitoring endpoints).
  • Explore Wi-Fi and RF engineering technologies and run PoC to optimize Wi-Fi performance at select locations.
  • Analyze usage statistics to improve customer experience and operations.
  • Leverage BI and AI to develop value-added tools, APIs, and solutions for Network Engineering.
  • Assist in developing network design topologies for Amtrak stations and facilities.
  • Create Bills of Materials (BOMs) for stakeholders.
  • Develop business requirements, test cases, and project deliverables.

Position Summary

The DT Network Intern will work with the DT Network Infrastructure Services team as a member of the team that designs, builds and implements the IT Networks at Amtrak.

Essential Functions
  • Help coordinate and participate in the installation of network infrastructure, including network switches, wireless access points (WAPs), and network monitoring endpoints.
  • Explore advanced Wi-Fi and Radio Frequency (RF) engineering technologies and conduct proof-of-concept initiatives to optimize Wi-Fi performance at select locations.
  • Evaluate usage statistics by analyzing network and application data for high-priority locations that impact both customer experience and Amtrak personnel (e.g., Mechanical, Materials Control, etc.).
  • Leverage Business Intelligence (BI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop value-added processes, tools, APIs, and solutions that advance Network Engineering capabilities.
  • Assist in the development of network design topologies for Amtrak stations and facilities.
  • Support Network Engineers through the creation of Bills of Materials (BOMs) for Amtrak stakeholders.
  • Drive the development of business requirements, test cases, and project management deliverables that support scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
  • Must be actively pursuing a degree in Networking Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, and Telecommunications Engineering.
  • M ust have at least 2 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or a junior status at minimum.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Basic understanding of network protocols , radio frequency/wireless technologies.
  • Candidates must possess strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work a minimum 16 hours per week.
Pay Transparency

The hourly range is $18.00 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
