Job Description Summary

Faculty Optometrist in the Department of Ophthalmology provides clinical, teaching and research duties, as their experience and interest allows. The position also supervises medical students and residents in clinics and participates in the didactic teaching program. Faculty interested in research may be afforded protected time to complete clinical and bench research, but will be encouraged to participate in clinical research and scientific presentations at national/regional meetings in addition to their clinical and teaching duties.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
  • Provide services as an Optometrist, comprising comprehensive clinics for all ages.
  • Participate in the didactic teaching program including supervising medical students and residents.
  • Participate in JayDoc clinics.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with patients as monitored by the hospital's patient experience survey.
  • Serve on departmental committees and provide other service to the School of Medicine and the University as needed.
  • Participate in clinical research and scientific presentations at national/regional meetings as appropriate with academic track.
  • Provide clinical and surgical services to the VA and/or other sites under a Professional Services Agreement with the University of Kansas Health System.
Required Qualifications

Education: Doctor of Optometry Degree (OD) from an accredited school of optometry.

The position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience with fitting and care coordination of medically necessary contact lenses; managing post‑operative care for specialty surgeons.
  • Experience with an academic background involving teaching with an interest in clinical or basic research.
  • Experience in growing own research programs with the ability to obtain funding from public and private sources.
