Job description

Introduction

Anticipated opening for the 2025-2026 School Year. Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community that, in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners. We are looking for dedicated individuals to join us in the education of the children at MSD.

Location of Position

MSD, Frederick Campus, 101 Clarke Place, Frederick, MD 21705

Main Purpose of Job

To provide speech, language, AAC, and aural rehabilitation services to MSD students, including those with multiple disabilities. The services support a bilingual approach by facilitating and enhancing student communication skills.

Position Duties
  1. Administer language, speech, AAC, and auditory skill diagnostic evaluations.
  2. Conduct speech, language, speech reading, AAC, and auditory skills development sessions.
  3. Evaluate and revise treatment plans as necessary.
  4. Maintain records and report on student services and progress.
  5. Participate in school-based meetings as assigned or requested.
  6. Serve as an IEP team member, determine present levels of performance, and establish goals tailored to the student's needs.
  7. Use developmentally appropriate activities, therapy materials, assistive technologies, and oral-motor strategies.
  8. Adapt therapy strategies, including service delivery methods inside and outside the classroom.
  9. Consult with professional and non-professional personnel, including parents and classroom staff.
  10. Assist in training staff on amplification equipment, feeding/swallowing precautions, and augmentative communication.
  11. Conduct and participate in seminars, in-service, and professional training.
  12. Maintain confidentiality about students' care.
  13. Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Department Head.
Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology as required by the Maryland State Board of Examiners. Experience working with deaf and hard-of-hearing populations, considering hearing levels, language abilities, and cultural diversity. Proficiency in computer programs (e.g., Google, MS Word, Touch Chat, Boardmaker, Maryland Online IEP). Basic sign language skills with a willingness to improve to fluency.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness to learn and improve American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Certification through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development through lectures, literature, and continuing education.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

Current license from the Maryland State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathologists or eligibility to obtain one. License renewal in accordance with Maryland regulations.

Special Requirements

Subject to criminal background check at own expense. Submission of three letters of recommendation required.
