Job summary

Hitachi Energy in Cary, North Carolina is seeking a FACTS Controls Engineer to join our Power Quality Solutions team. You will design, program, test, verify, and commission advanced control applications that support utility customers and evolving energy landscapes.

This hybrid role offers exposure to MACH control systems, HIL testing, and cross-border collaboration with teams in North America, Sweden, and India.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Power Systems, Power Electronics, Control Theory, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of controls engineering experience, preferably within power systems applications.
  • 2+ years of programming experience across multiple environments and languages.
  • Experience designing and testing PI, PID, or similar control algorithms.
  • Strong knowledge of power systems, control theory, and power electronics applications.
  • Experience with MATLAB, real-time simulators, or similar modeling tools; FACTS/HVDC experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain control algorithms for FACTS applications.
  • Program and configure the MACH control system to meet project requirements.
  • Perform control logic development, debugging, testing, and deployment activities.
  • Conduct Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing with real-time simulators.
  • Create models and simulations for power electronics and power systems.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, commissioning, and site startup activities.

How You'll Make an Impact

Your Background
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Power Systems, Power Electronics, Control Theory, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 5+ years of controls engineering experience, preferably within power systems applications.

  • 2+ years of programming experience with the ability to work across multiple programming environments and languages.

  • Experience designing and testing PI, PID, or similar control algorithms.

  • Strong knowledge of power systems, control theory, and power electronics applications.

  • Experience with MATLAB, real-time simulators, or similar modeling and simulation tools. FACTS, HVDC, or utility power systems experience is highly preferred.
