Job summary

Oakland Community College offers a Facility Technician apprenticeship to develop the skills needed for the repair and upkeep of the college's physical plant and facilities across mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.

You will learn to operate and maintain air handlers, boilers, chillers, and building automation systems while assisting in renovations and routine preventive maintenance in a multi-cultural environment. Safety standards and teamwork are emphasized.

Qualifications

• Repair diverse HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting and mechanical systems.
• Commitment to safety standards and ability to follow directions.
• Complete HVAC courses or hold a Boiler License as pre-qualification.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains HVAC equipment including air handlers and unit ventilators.
• Maintains chillers, cooling towers, and refrigeration equipment.
• Operates boilers and related water pumping systems.
• Tests water properties and treats cooling towers with chemicals.
• Repairs plumbing, lighting, electrical and door hardware.
• Ensures compliance with fire regulations and OSHA requirements.
• Uses building automation/DDC system to operate equipment efficiently.
• Assists in construction and renovation of buildings.
• Performs preventative maintenance on equipment.
• Welds or brazes when required.

Job description

Under the direction of the Chief of Campus Facility Operations; the Facility Technician apprenticeship will develop the skills necessary to fulfill the responsibilities for the repair and upkeep of the college physical plant and facilities performing a variety of architectural, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and maintenance assignments. This employee is expected to work in a multi-cultural diverse working environment

1. Operates and maintains air handlers, unit ventilators, and other HVAC equipment
2. Operates and maintains chillers, cooling towers, chilled water pumping systems, and refrigeration equipment.
3. Operates and maintains boilers, heat exchangers, heating water pumping systems and related equipment.
4. Tests water properties and treats closed loop systems and cooling towers with water treatment chemicals.
5. Repairs plumbing, lighting, electrical, and door hardware.
6. Maintains compliance with fire regulations and OSHA requirements.
7. Utilizes building automation / DDC system to operate equipment efficiently.
8. Assists in construction and renovation of buildings.
9. Performs preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment.
10. 10. Performs all other related maintenance and repair duties as assigned.
11. Welds or brazes when required

• Ability to perform repairs on a wide variety of plumbing, lighting, electrical, mechanical, and HVAC equipment efficiently with direction.
• Ability to maintain appropriate safety standards.
• Ability to follow directions from others.

Complete (or have completed) one of the two following pre-qualification paths:

1. Successfully complete three (3) HVAC classes at Oakland Community College on the employee's own time from list below:
   • HVA1114 - Introduction to Refrigeration
   • HVA1150 - Basic Principles of HVACR Control
   • HVA1210 - Domestic and Commercial Refrigeration
   • HVA1220 - Commercial Refrigeration II
   • HVA1310 - Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Design I
   • HVA1430 - Residential and Commercial Control Systems
   • HVA1610 - Heating Technology I
   • HVA1630 -Heating Technology II
   • HVA1650 - Troubleshooting Air Conditioning
   • HVA1800 - Advanced Controls
   • HVA1390- Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Design II
   • HVA2510 - Direct Digital Controls
2. Possess a High Pressure Boiler License from the City of Detroit or from the City of Dearborn
