Job summary

YSS, a nonprofit serving youth in Ames, IA, seeks a Facilities Technician to maintain buildings and grounds. You will open/close facilities, manage vendors, and coordinate safety across sites to keep operations running smoothly.

Ideal candidates have 2+ years in trades, a valid Iowa driver’s license, and day-shift availability with some travel. We offer comprehensive benefits in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience in trades such as carpentry, maintenance, electrical, HVAC, or custodial work.
• Valid Iowa driver’s license with reliable transportation.
• Ability to follow safety rules and work in a team environment.
• Strong problem-solving mindset with proactive maintenance approach.

Responsibilities

• Open and close buildings as required.
• Perform repairs, preventative maintenance, and basic upgrades.
• Assist with seasonal prep and larger projects.
• Use tools safely and comply with safety guidelines.
• Travel to outreach sites and respond to emergencies as needed.
• Coordinate with vendors and contractors to get work done.
• Maintain inventory, records, and office gear.
• Assist with purchases, contracts, and related tasks.

Required Qualifications - MUST HAVES:

• Hands-on experience: At least 2 years in the trades—carpentry, construction, custodial work, electrical, HVAC, maintenance, painting, plumbing… you name it.
• Jack-of-all-trades mindset: If it breaks, you fix it. Even better, you prevent it from breaking in the first place.
• Reliable transportation: A valid Iowa driver's license and dependable wheels to get where you need to be.
• You'll be driving a YSS vehicle, so we need you to:
  Be at least 21
  Have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record
  Carry insurance that meets YSS standards

Preferred Qualifications - SHOULD HAVES:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Sharp eye for what needs attention—and the initiative to take care of it before anyone asks.
• Strong multitasking skills—you stay cool and organized, even when things get busy.
