Job summary

Southeast New Mexico College in Carlsbad, NM is seeking a Facilities Technician to perform multi‑craft maintenance across electrical, plumbing, grounds, carpentry, and related tasks. The role supports day‑to‑day operations under the Director of Facilities, coordinating with a team to keep campus facilities safe and functional.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Monitors, maintains, and performs standard repairs to buildings and grounds.
  • Assists with non-technical electrical, plumbing, and HVAC tasks.
  • Performs general maintenance including painting, carpentry, and custodial duties.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies and schedules routine maintenance.
  • Documents maintenance activities and ensures safety in the workplace.

$20.24 – $23.27 DOE

Purpose and Scope:

Under general supervision of the Director of Facilities the Facilities Technician will perform multi‑craft functions for the college. Functions may include non‑technical electrical, plumbing, grounds, carpentry, locksmith, custodial, and painting; provides day‑to‑day coordination, teamwork, and leadership to other employees performing similar work.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors, maintains, and performs standard repairs to buildings and grounds.
  • Assists licensed electrician with non‑technical repairs.
  • Monitors performance of heating, ventilation, and cooling systems; performs standard repair and replacement of components.
  • Performs non‑technical maintenance tasks such as cleaning of heating and cooling fan coil units and adjustment of system controls.
  • Performs non‑technical maintenance of plumbing systems, including standard repair of leaking fixtures, cleaning obstructed waste lines, installing water coolers, and/or performing non‑technical modifications to plumbing and water supply systems.
  • Performs carpentry maintenance tasks including routine sheetrock/drywall installation and/or repair, window, roof, cabinet, and countertop replacement, painting and texturing, and door and hardware installation, paint interior and exterior finishes, as appropriate.
  • May perform general maintenance, custodial, and trash removal tasks.
  • Maintains the inventory of parts and supplies for facilities repairs; orders materials as needed.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Documents facilities maintenance requirements; maintains appropriate records of work performed.
  • Performs snow removal, as required.
  • Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of one or more building trades including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, utility operations, building maintenance, and carpentry.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to assist with repair and maintenance of heating and cooling equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows‑based operating environment.
  • Records maintenance skills.
Work Environment and Physical Demand:
  • Use of computer and video display terminal for extended periods
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills
  • Ability to communicate information orally and in writing
  • Ability to receive and interpret written and verbal instructions
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or reaching
  • May require flexible scheduling to support infrastructure needs, emergencies, or system deployments
