Position Summary
The Facilities Steward will be responsible for the cleaning, sanitation and general upkeep of all interior and exterior buildings, surfaces, furnishings and equipment. The role will also assist in the set‑ups and take‑downs of furniture and equipment for programs and building uses, and maintain the grounds.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Requires at least 6 months of experience in current janitorial methods and procedures.
- Must have thorough knowledge of health and sanitation requirements of a public facility, preferably utilizing "green/sustainable" cleaning products and methods.
- Requires at least 6 months of experience performing facilities maintenance.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.
Essential Functions
- Provide routine cleaning duties and detail cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming and dusting of all interior and exterior building surfaces and furnishings.
- Regular cleaning/detail and sanitation of areas including restrooms, shower rooms, locker rooms, fitness areas and kitchen.
- Prepare sites for special events and trainings (set up and take down furniture and equipment for a variety of internal and community events); assist in moving furniture and equipment while setting security alarms and responding to alarm calls during and after regular work hours, and maintaining clean, safe, and orderly work sites; perform routine inspection of facilities to check for maintenance issues to ensure proper working order.
- Regular cleaning and sweeping of exterior areas including sidewalks, paved areas, and landscaping.
- Maintain the appearance and functionality of the facilities and grounds components including doors, windows, flooring, walls, ceilings and furnishings.
- Maintain records of cleaning, service and repair of building systems.
- Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
- Maintain the Code of Ethics policy established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.
- Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings.
- Maintain regular and punctual work attendance.
- Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, saws, brush trimmers and axes.
- Mow and edge lawns using power mowers and edger.
- Turn off/on irrigation valves as needed.
- May possibly spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides onto grass, shrubs and trees using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
- Operate powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, twin‑axle vehicles, chainsaws, electric clippers, scissor lifts, forklifts, boom lifts, power washers, floor buffers, carpet cleaners, street sweepers.
- Assist in routine preventive maintenance and make repairs on buildings, equipment, and facility systems. Facility systems include buildings (walls, floors, ceilings, fixtures and furnishings), plumbing, electrical, structural, pool and mechanical systems as required.
- Report mechanical malfunctions to the Facilities management staff.
- Assist in the periodic maintenance of the Center's vehicle fleet.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye‑hand coordination; use of vision; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25‑50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds; traveling by airplane. This employee may also be required to work weekends and evenings.

The position requires talking to co‑workers, clients, vendors; requires written communication to and from co‑workers, clients, vendors; talking on the telephone; requires responding to written or verbal requests of co‑workers, clients, and vendors; requires training/giving verbal and written instructions; requires receiving verbal and written instructions; requires writing/composing written language; requires reading; requires visiting/working at other worksites; requires communication via the latest technologies. The position requires the ability to interact with co‑workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The position also requires the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
Equipment Needs
Equipment used includes: electric powered vacuum cleaner, cleaning cart, ladders, forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, shampoo/buffing/waxing machines, hedge trimmer, lawnmower, pruner, chainsaw and all chemicals associated with maintenance and cleaning.
Work Environment
The employee is regularly exposed to inside and outside work in all types of weather, i.e., wet and/or humid conditions, heat or cold and moving mechanical equipment. The employee will regularly be exposed to chemicals used while performing job duties.
Certificates & Licenses
The candidate chosen for this position must have a valid driver's license and insured transportation. On an annual basis, employees are required to participate in The Salvation Army's Fleet Safety Program.
