Job summary

Scottsdale Unified School District is seeking an experienced journey‑level trades professional to lead a team of staff across multiple trades including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, locksmithing, irrigation, painting and carpentry. The incumbent will train others, review records, and maintain related drawings and blueprints.

The role requires a vocational degree with four years of related trades experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

  • Requires a vocational degree and four years of specialized trades experience or an equivalent education/experience combination.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and applicable codes is essential.
  • Experience with reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead lower level staff: assign work, monitor performance, train and contribute to evaluations.
  • Perform journey level repairs and installations on district facilities and grounds; respond to emergencies and safety concerns.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment; prepare work orders and maintain records and drawings.
  • Maintain and purchase supplies, equipment, and tools; manage inventory in assigned area.
  • Perform duties similar in scope and level as required.

Class Summary

Incumbents perform journey level skilled activities which include the work of mechanics, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, locksmiths, irrigation, painters, and carpenters. Trains and oversees work of other employees. Maintains related specs, drawings, blueprints, and records.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Serves as a lead to lower level staff, which may include: prioritizing and assigning work; monitoring the performance of lower level staff; training staff on work methods and procedures; and, participating in performance evaluations.
  • Repairs and/or regulates District buildings, fixtures, systems, facilities, and/or grounds by making journey level repairs or installations depending on area of assignment/expertise; responds to emergency calls for assistance; responds to customer complaints or safety concerns.
  • Installs, makes, and/or modifies a variety of materials, fixtures, and/or equipment.
  • Inspects facilities, systems, and/or fixtures and ensures periodic servicing.
  • Prepares a variety of documentation and/or standardized paperwork, including work orders, related to daily assignments; reviews and maintains specifications, drawings, blueprints, and other related records in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Maintains and cleans systems and equipment.
  • Maintains and purchases supplies, equipment, tools, and trucks in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

(positions in this class typically require):

Vocational Degree and four years of specialized trades experience directly related to the area of assignment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing Requirements
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License.
Some Positions May Require
  • CFC;
  • Pesticide Applicator License;
  • Commercial Driver’s License, Class A;
  • ASE Certifications;
  • Licensure in a trade.

  • Performing mathematical calculations, including algebra and geometry;
  • Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, and standards;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and intense noises.
