Job summary

BWX Technologies, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA is seeking a Facilities Plumbing Technician to install, maintain, and repair a wide range of plumbing systems across the facility.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of six years of experience in industrial/commercial plumbing.
  • Must read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and piping drawings.
  • Strong understanding of plumbing codes, safety regulations.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting pumps, valves, fixtures, and piping networks.
  • Able to perform pressure tests, leak detection, and system diagnostics.
  • Familiar with lockout/tagout and confined space safety.
  • Must operate pipe threaders, welders, and brazing tools.
  • Physically capable of lifting moderate loads and working in tight spaces.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain DOE/DOD security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Install stainless and CPVC piping for lab equipment and fume hoods.
  • Support general facilities tasks such as snow removal and furniture moves.
  • Collaborate with facility team on preventative maintenance.
  • Perform periodic welding and brazing as needed.
  • Work in radiologically controlled areas when required.
  • Inspect and maintain water and drainage systems for code compliance.
  • Read blueprints and technical drawings to support work.
  • Document maintenance activities and update records.

Position Overview:

As a Facilities Plumbing Technician, you’ll support industrial and commercial operations by installing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of plumbing systems throughout the facility. The role includes performing construction and maintenance tasks, supporting specialized piping associated with laboratory equipment, and conducting welding or brazing as needed. Technicians also assist with general facility support activities and collaborate on preventative maintenance efforts. This position may require work in radiologically controlled areas and occasional weekend or call‑in shifts to meet operational needs.

Location:

The position will report to the Lynchburg, VA Mt. Athos site.

Your Day to Day as a Facilities Plumbing Technician:
  • Perform industrial/commercial maintenance and construction work associated with plumbing.
  • Perform installation of stainless and CPVC exhaust piping systems associated with laboratory equipment and fume hoods.
  • Assist with facilities support tasks such as snow removal, office furniture rearrangement, and equipment relocation.
  • Collaborate with the facility support team to perform preventative maintenance on different types of equipment.
  • Perform periodic welding and brazing.
  • Perform work in radiologically controlled areas, if required.
  • Perform troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of plumbing fixtures, valves, pumps, backflow preventers, and related components.
  • Inspect and maintain domestic water, industrial water, and drainage systems to ensure proper operation and code compliance.
  • Conduct routine system checks, pressure tests, leak detection, and flow monitoring to identify potential issues early.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support installation and maintenance activities.
  • Maintain compliance with all facility safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and confined space requirements.
  • Document work performed, update maintenance records, and communicate system status to supervisors and facility stakeholders.
  • Support coordination with contractors, vendors, and other skilled trades during facility upgrades or repair projects.
  • Periodic weekend or call-in work to support facility needs may be required.
Required Qualifications:
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience is required.
  • Must be able to work with air, gases, and water piping systems throughout the buildings and underground.
  • Must have a strong understanding of plumbing codes, standards, and safety regulations relevant to industrial and commercial environments.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and piping schematics.
  • Must be proficient in troubleshooting plumbing systems, including identifying faults in pumps, valves, fixtures, and piping networks.
  • Must be capable of performing pressure tests, leak detection, and system diagnostics using industry‑standard tools and methods.
  • Must be familiar with lockout/tagout procedures, confined space entry, and other safety requirements associated with facility maintenance work.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of plumbing and maintenance equipment, including pipe threaders, press tools, welders, and brazing tools.
  • Must maintain accurate documentation and update maintenance records in accordance with facility procedures.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with facility teams, contractors, and vendors.
  • Must be able to lift and carry moderate loads and work in physically demanding environments (e.g., tight spaces, overhead piping, outdoor areas).
  • Must be able to wear a full-face respirator which requires passing a company physical.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for onsite or offsite work as needed.
  • A journeyman or masters card in plumbing is highly preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Pay: $60,000.00- $90,000.00

The base salary range for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $60,000.00 and $90,000.00 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at‑will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
