Job summary

The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX is seeking a journeyman‑level trades technician to maintain and repair heavy commercial building infrastructure across multiple crafts, including Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, HVAC, Structural, Instrumentation/Electronics, Refrigeration, and Fire/Alarms.

Responsibilities include proactive maintenance, inspections, major repairs, and mentoring junior staff.

Qualifications

• Must hold a license or approved equal with two years journeyman experience.
• Apprentice program or trade school with two years journeyman experience.
• Community college certification or associate degree with two years journeyman experience.
• NCCER training or UTMB certification with two years journeyman experience.
• 8 years of industrial/heavy commercial experience may substitute for licensure/education with appropriate validation.
• Must be able to perform essential functions in a post‑offer test and lift up to 100 lbs; bending, standing and walking required.

• Consults with customers on priority of work; serves as liaison between customer and Property Services.
• Performs detailed inspections of equipment and informs supervisory of issues.
• Performs major repairs on complex systems and supporting equipment.
• Starts up, shuts down and adjusts equipment per procedures.
• Performs preventative or corrective maintenance tasks as assigned.
• Identifies maintenance needs and performs proactive repairs.
• Trains and mentors new personnel; teaches codes and tool use.
• Reads and interprets marked up blueprints/drawings for corrections.
• Attends project reviews, shutdowns and commissioning.
• Supports shift coverage, on-call duties, and after hours duties in a 24/7 operation.
• Participates in disaster preparedness lists and recovery teams.
• Completes UTMB compliance training; attends safety meetings.
• Identifies and reports safety hazards; adheres to internal controls.
• Performs related duties as required.

Licensure/certification/degree options listed above can be substituted by 8 years of Industrial/Heavy Commercial experience in at least one craft (Job information and references are required to validate 8 years of Industrial/ Heavy Commercial experience relative to our environment).

Must be capable of demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job in a post-offer employment test as administered by UTMB Rehab Services.

This job requires the ability to lift up to 100 lbs. from the floor to the knuckle and requires frequent bending, standing and walking.

Job Description

Perform at a journeyman level in at least one distinct industrial/commercial trade craft (Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, HVAC, Structural, Instrumentation/Electronics, Refrigeration, Electronics/Fire Alarms) for maintenance and repair of heavy commercial building infrastructure and equipment.

Job Duties

• Proactively maintains all aspects of the assigned area of responsibility.
• Consults with customers on priority of work and assumes full ownership of customer problems and equipment breakdowns. Serves as liaison between customer and Property Services (Physical Plant).
• Performs detailed inspections of equipment for proper operation. Informs appropriate supervisory or managerial personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and takes appropriate action.
• Performs major repairs on complex systems and supporting equipment.
• Starts up, shuts down and adjusts equipment or systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
• Performs preventative or corrective maintenance tasks as assigned and within timelines.
• Identifies maintenance needs and performs pro‑active repairs before breakdown occurs.
• Train and mentor new personnel in area of expertise as required. Teaches basic knowledge of codes and proper tool use.
• Reads and interprets and provides "marked up" blueprints / drawings for corrections when needed.
• Attends and participates in project designs, reviews, shutdowns, project meetings, final inspections and commissioning.
• Supports area shift coverage, on‑call duties, and after hours or extended projects as needed for an institution that operates 24 hours a day seven days a week.
• Participate in disaster/hurricane preparedness list i.e. E1A (Ride out team) or E1B (Recovery team).
• Complete all UTMB required compliance training.
• Attends staff, training and safety meetings.
• Identifies and reports safety hazards.
• Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
• Performs related duties as required.

Equipment

Use of hand and power tools used in industrial building allied trades. Basic computer skills and ability use and operate handheld electronic communication devices. Skills associated with diagnostic testing equipment.

Working Environment/Location of Position

Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory, and/or office environments. May be exposed to such occupational hazards such as communicable diseases and harmful chemicals. Some exposure to weather and physical hazards. Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards and may be required to work in high locations or crawlspaces.

• Exposure to areas under construction.
• Usual working conditions found in craft shops and mechanical rooms.
• Exposure to adverse weather conditions or temperature extremes.
• Exposure to electrical/mechanical hazards.
• Proper safety and precaution must be closely observed when operating and repairing specialized equipment and systems.
• Climb ladders and stairways and work on building rooftops at high elevations.
• Work in confined spaces such as ceilings, under-floor crawlspaces, and manholes.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render this position security sensitive, and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215, Texas Education Code. The successful candidate may be required to pass a Department of Justice security clearance.

Salary Range

Actual salary commensurate with experience.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, may be required to work extended hours and/or rotating shifts.
