Job summary

Columbia University Irving Medical Center is seeking a Mechanic A to perform all phases of repair and maintenance, with reading of blueprints and diagrams. The role may require responding to emergencies and overtime per the union agreement.

The position emphasizes preventive maintenance and proficiency in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tasks. Responsibilities include electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, fixture installation, and building repairs across facilities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent required.
• Three years of experience in trades and/or technical discipline or completion of an approved training program.
• Must have all applicable licenses and permits.
• Ability to read and interpret documents and follow written/oral/diagrams; diagnose problems and draw conclusions.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move heavy objects with assistance.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, repair, and replace circuits, wiring, conduits, boxes, switches, motors and lighting; test equipment and document tests.
• Install, repair, and replace fixtures including plumbing fittings and valves.
• Maintain and repair domestic water piping; cut, thread, and fit pipe; braze/solder as needed.
• Repair/maintain interior doors and hardware; install bathroom equipment.
• Patch, plaster, and paint walls; maintain safety and compliance with codes.
• Maintain records of daily assignments and follow work orders; assist in evaluating new equipment for purchase.
