Overview

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:Responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall operation of the Corps and shelter facilities. Performs general maintenance and janitorial duties, coordinates repairs with outside vendors, monitors facility needs, and helps ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, and building requirements.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform routine preventive and general maintenance of the Corps and shelter facilities, including minor plumbing, electrical, HVAC-related, lighting, ceiling tile, fixture, and other basic repairs within the scope of the position.
  • Inspect interior and exterior areas regularly to identify maintenance, safety, sanitation, and repair needs; report concerns and coordinate timely corrective action.Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of offices, common areas, shelter areas, kitchens, bathrooms, stairs, windows, floors, and other assigned spaces in accordance with established health and safety standards.
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, sanitize, empty trash receptacles, replace liners, clean fixtures, and restock restroom and facility supplies as needed.
  • Maintain janitorial and maintenance equipment, tools, storage areas, and janitorial closets in a clean, organized, safe, and operable condition.
  • Ensure cleaning chemicals are properly labeled, stored, diluted, and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and safety procedures; use required personal protective equipment.
  • Coordinate, prioritize, track, and follow through on facility maintenance and repair requests to ensure timely completion.
  • Contact and coordinate with approved outside vendors and contractors for specialized repairs and services, including plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning, and other building systems.
  • Monitor facility requirements and assist with maintaining compliance with applicable City, State, and local codes and inspections, including fire extinguishers, permits, and other required building-related documentation.
  • Perform scheduled facility maintenance, including HVAC filter changes, air vent maintenance, replacement of light bulbs and ceiling tiles, and cleaning of light fixtures.
  • Order and maintain adequate inventories of authorized janitorial, maintenance, paper, vending, and building supplies, subject to approval by the Corps Officer/Commanding Officer.
  • Open the facility and operate the security system as assigned; serve as a backup facility/security contact and respond to building emergencies when required.
  • Perform exterior property maintenance, including snow removal, salting, lawn mowing, litter and debris removal, landscaping, hedge trimming, and routine inspection of the grounds.
  • Assist with seasonal activities, programs, room setups, moving supplies or equipment, deliveries, errands, and other facility-related needs, including lifting and operating equipment as required.
  • Operate Salvation Army vehicles as authorized to complete job-related errands, pickups, deliveries, and facility responsibilities.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor and interact with employees, volunteers, program participants, vendors, and visitors in a manner consistent with The Salvation Army's standards of compassion, simplicity, and kindness.
  • Attend required meetings and training and follow all applicable Salvation Army policies, procedures, safety requirements, and confidentiality standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the effective operation, safety, cleanliness, and maintenance of the facility.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in facility maintenance, janitorial services, building operations, or a related field; supervisory experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of basic building maintenance and minor repairs, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general facility upkeep.
  • Ability to read and follow instructions regarding cleaning chemicals, equipment operation, and workplace safety procedures.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet The Salvation Army's requirements for operating Army vehicles.
  • Ability to successfully complete required background clearances and organizational training.

SPECIAL SKILLS, CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • General maintenance and basic repair skills.
  • Ability to identify facility maintenance and safety concerns and coordinate appropriate corrective action.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solvei​ng skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and respond appropriately to urgent facility needs.
  • Ability to interact professionally and compassionately with employees, volunteers, program participants, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Basic knowledge of workplace safety practices, proper chemical handling, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Basic computer skills for email, recordkeeping, supply ordering, and maintenance coordination.
