Program Overview

UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies Business Department offers a Facilities Management Certificate designed to teach the nine areas of competency required by the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA). The curriculum is continually updated and tailored to provide students with the background and techniques to become responsible and effective Facilities Management professionals.

Responsibilities

• Design syllabus and curriculum as assigned
• Communicate expectations to students
• Prepare and deliver course materials: face‑to‑face, online, and/or in combination
• Evaluate student learning and assign grades
• Use subject‑matter expertise to impart knowledge to students
• Communicate with Program Manager and Instructor Services Team on a timely basis
• Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of practice
• Respond to student needs and questions
• Handle mechanics of position according to deadlines (LOAs, texts, A/V, grade submission, etc.)
• Employ cultural competencies to reach any international students in assigned classes

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of an advanced degree from an accredited institution (equivalent combinations of education and work experience may be considered in exceptional cases)
• Current and demonstrated expertise in the subject area
• Recognized leadership or authority on the subject matter
• Skill in developing and revising educational or training content

Preferred Qualifications

• Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex ideas and information effectively
• Comfort interacting with national and international professionals and students
• Previous experience teaching at the university level or in a corporate setting
• Experience in curriculum design and/or assessing student performance
• Proficiency or familiarity with online teaching tools such as Canvas, learning management systems (LMS), webcasting, and audio/video recording
• Current participation in industry-related professional associations

Special Conditions of Employment and Compensation

Compensation for teaching one section of this course is estimated at $1,300–$6,500, depending on course modality, units of instruction, and number of enrollments. Instructional agreements are made on a section‑by‑section basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee of future sections or other courses.

All Division of Extended Studies Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement”. The instructor’s Letter of Agreement outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and compensation terms, and is subject to department policies and procedures. If a course section an instructor plans to teach is cancelled, the agreement—including rights to compensation for future section meetings—is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent on course preparation or other events.
