Job description

DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance of District facilities and grounds; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Facilities Maintenance Worker is an entry-level general laborer classification. Incumbents will typically be based at the Lake Piru Recreation Area facility but may be assigned to perform tasks at any District facility.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed.

• Maintains facilities and grounds in a neat and clean appearance by: painting exteriors of buildings, using brushes, rollers, and ladders; setting traps for rodent pests; picking up litter; emptying trash receptacles; cleaning bathrooms; and making minor repairs.
• Performs grounds keeping duties, such as: mowing grass; planting bushes; trimming hedges and trees; repairing the irrigation system; and spraying herbicide.
• Operates District vehicles to travel between work sites; services vehicles and small pieces of equipment; assists in servicing larger pieces of equipment, such as tractors, graders, scrapers, and bulldozers, and machinery, such as pumps, motors, generators, and compressors.
• Assists in installation of water system piping and equipment and in collection of groundwater samples by digging and performing other manual tasks.
• Completes a wide range of training on safety-related topics, including training on working in confined spaces.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be called upon to assist other staff in responding to District emergencies.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, and tools used in cleaning and maintaining building interiors and exteriors, including painting;
• Methods, materials, and tools used in groundskeeping;
• Safety practices related to general work, vehicle operation, and chemical use;
• Arithmetic including multiplication and measuring;
• Standard written English sufficient to: read and understand written safety instructions.

Ability to:

• Follow written and verbal instructions;
• Use hand and power tools;
• Operate vehicles, including trucks and tractors;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues;
• Work independently or as part of a team.

EDUCATION

Possession of sufficient education to provide the English and arithmetic skills required for the job. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent is desirable.

EXPERIENCE

At least one year of experience in general maintenance and landscaping.

LICENSE

• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required upon hire.
• Possession of a California Class A Driver's License is highly desirable.
