GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs semi-skilled work as an apprentice carpenter, plumber, and electrician in the maintenance and repair of City buildings and systems, performs limited maintenance engineer work, often in assistance to more highly skilled maintenance staff. Assists with minor repairs to HVAC systems, boilers and related equipment; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Facilities Maintenance Technician is differentiated from the Facilities Maintenance Engineer I and II on the basis of skills, certifications, experience and demonstrated ability to perform specified skills. This class is intended to provide an entry level, on-the-job skills development experience that prepares the incumbent for greater independence and applied knowledge in the field required at the higher levels. The work performed by employees in this series is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for assisting in the efficient and craftsman-like performance related to facilities, building maintenance and HVAC systems in all City facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Some skill in the proper use, maintenance and safety of power tools such as drills, saws and hand tools; ability to work with computer systems and routine office equipment and software; some knowledge of common practices, tools, terminology and accident prevention precautions of the carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; ability to estimate time and materials needed for tasks and projects; ability to operate common woodworking machinery; ability to use hand tools related to plumbing and electrical repairs; basic computer skills required; strong customer service skills; and the ability to develop effective working relationships.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience in the building trades to demonstrate mechanical ability and completion of a standard high school or a certified building trades school; or any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Visual ability: sufficient to perform finished carpenter, cabinetmaker skilled tasks, to observe unsafe conditions of buildings, to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, etc. Ability to read gauges, instruments, etc. Hearing ability: sufficient to understand radio transmissions, conversation with other individuals both in person and over a telephone. Speaking ability: sufficient to communicate effectively with other individuals in person, over a telephone and over a radio. Freedom from mental disorders which would interfere with performance of duties as described.
