Job summary

The Jackson Laboratory, a nonprofit biomedical research institution with campuses across the United States, seeks a skilled facilities technician in Sacramento, CA. Under minimal supervision, you will perform preventive and general maintenance, repairs, and renovations on a range of systems and equipment.

You will lead small projects, mentor junior technicians, work with contractors, and help ensure safety, compliance, and efficient operation of research facilities.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 2 years of experience.
• Ability to learn and apply precision maintenance techniques.
• Knowledge of codes related to plumbing, electrical, and renovation tasks.
• May require shift work and on-call rotation.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventive maintenance, adjustments, and basic repairs on piping and plumbing systems including fixtures, electric mechanicals, instrumentation, and automation equipment; steam and process hot water systems including control and isolation valves, steam traps, heat exchangers, pumps, and associated equipment.
• Participates in major component replacement and evaluation of complex system problems.
• Trains and mentors junior technicians.
• Manages small projects and contractors in the field.
• Assists supervisor with capital and operational work planning & execution.
• Acts as a technical lead on complex jobs.

Job description

Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of skilled preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work on facilities and systems.

The hourly range is $27.29 - $52.34. Rate will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

• Performs preventive maintenance, adjustments, and basic repairs on piping and plumbing systems including fixtures, electric mechanicals, instrumentation, and automation equipment steam and process hot water systems including control and isolation valves, steam traps, heat exchangers, pumps, and associated equipment; process equipment including tunnel washers, rack washers, bottle washers, autoclaves, bedding dispensers and drying cabinets, water treatment systems, etc.
• Participates in major component replacement and evaluation of complex system problems.
• Provides general clean up, housekeeping, and maintenance of mechanical equipment rooms.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned based on the needs of the day.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 2 years of experience required.
• Performs work with minimal supervision in the field.
• Ability to learn and consistently apply modern precision maintenance techniques for coupled and belt driven equipment.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and ordinances related to facilities plumbing, electrical, and renovation tasks performed.
• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and equipment schematics.
• Applicable State licenses such as Plumbing, Electrical or HVAC held in high regard.
• May require occasional shift work including nights, holidays and weekend to support special projects or events.
• Participation in an on-call rotation is required during which a response time of 45 minutes or less is needed.
• Will require occasional travel for reasons such as training or project support.
• Other miscellaneous duties may be required to be performed based on needs of the day.
