Job summary

Corning Incorporated is seeking a senior-level Project Engineer for Optical Fiber and Cable manufacturing processes worldwide. You will plan, scope, coordinate and control complex projects, providing technical leadership and ensuring schedules, costs, and quality meet objectives.

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope Of Position

In this position you will provide the leadership to plan / scope, coordinate and control complex projects involving multiple disciplines for Optical Fiber and Cable manufacturing processes worldwide, improving our ability to understand and control these processes services and thereby meeting our manufacturing objectives. You will also solve state of the art manufacturing problems requiring sophisticated engineering approaches, computational procedures, and broad engineering and scientific knowledge. You will act as the principal lead on one or more projects and provide technical leadership on facilities projects.

Day To Day Responsibilities

  • Propose, plan (scope), and implement projects requiring engineering analysis and modeling. Define the scope, financial impact, key activities, and method of evaluation on projects. Monitors and controls the technical, cost, and time objectives of the projects. Re-allocates funds and personnel to meet project requirements.
  • Initiate and implement major process improvement projects leading to improved understanding, significant cost reduction, or quality improvement.
  • Develop staffing requirements for projects. Ensure coordination, interaction, and effect resource utilization of appropriate groups on projects.
  • Direct the activities of other engineering personnel assigned to the projects.
  • Provide technical leadership on one or more projects. Primary technical leadership on Facilities Projects. Project management will be required on a wide variety of projects and not restricted to any one discipline or groups of equipment.
  • Act as a division consultant on problems involving delivery and integration of process services Worldwide for Optical Fiber and Cables (OFC) locations.
  • Maintain knowledge of current work being conducted both inside and outside of Corning in the areas of OFC.
  • Effectively communicate plans, progress, and problems to all concerned parties.
  • Document results.
  • Ensures coordination and interaction with other organizations that are involved in the projects.
  • Trains other specialists in project engineering, modeling, and engineering analysis.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering or similar required.
  • 10+ years of experience doing project management for large teams and large facilities.

Travel Requirement

Your travel could be as much as 25-50% and could include international travel. Travel duration is based on project work.

Required Skills

  • Project Management experience at green field / brown field building construction site and/or site modification
  • Experience from development through production
  • Experience working with suppliers, contractors, technical staff.
  • Skilled at reading and interpreting drawings and piping and instrumentation diagrams
  • Ability to deliver lowest total costs and identify savings opportunities on projects.
  • Ability to demonstrate concept to commissioning on several relative projects.
  • Can explain trouble shooting and systems design to all levels of management and employees.
  • Can identify potential problems and offer corrective or preventative actions.
  • Strong analytical skills to recognize the total cost of a solution and offer effective alternatives.
  • Ability to analyze systems data and develop a plan to increase the safety or efficiency of the system.
  • Strong expertise in construction project scheduling, including development and management of baseline schedules, look-ahead schedules, and recovery schedules for field execution.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Project for building detailed schedules, tracking progress, managing critical path activities, and reporting schedule updates to project team and leadership.
  • Working knowledge of Last Planner System, including pull planning, weekly work planning, constraint identification/removal, and percent plan complete (PPC) tracking.

  • Demonstrated ability to secure cooperative and effective performance from associates assigned to projects.
  • Maintain and value diversity / quality of personnel recruited, trained, and promoted.
  • Have a deep appreciation for the safety aspects of the Process Services design and the implementation.
  • Self-starter. Able to work alone or in teams equally well.
  • Ability to build relationships within cross functional groups; team building skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage large external teams of contractors/sub-contractors to achieve project objectives.

The range for this position is $107,287.00 - $147,520.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
