Fabrication Shop Manager Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage all day-to-day fabrication shop operations.
- Supervise shop supervisors, welders, fitters, fabricators, machine operators, and support personnel.
- Plan, schedule, and prioritize production to meet customer deadlines.
- Review fabrication drawings, specifications, and work orders for accuracy.
- Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials to maximize productivity.
- Monitor production schedules and adjust resources as needed.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and quality standards.
- Conduct daily production meetings and communicate project priorities.
- Monitor fabrication quality and ensure work meets customer specifications and applicable codes.
- Coordinate with engineering, project management, purchasing, logistics, and quality control teams.
- Monitor labor hours, production efficiency, and project costs.
- Train, mentor, and develop shop personnel.
- Conduct employee performance evaluations and provide coaching as needed.
- Assist with hiring, disciplinary actions, and workforce planning.
- Maintain equipment and coordinate preventative maintenance.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives that increase efficiency and reduce waste.
- Ensure housekeeping and organization throughout the fabrication facility.
Fabrication Shop Manager Requirements and Qualifications
- 7+ years of fabrication shop experience.
- 3-5+ years of supervisory or management experience in a fabrication or heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel and pipe fabrication processes.
- Experience supervising welders, fitters, fabricators, and shop personnel.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, blueprints, and isometric drawings.
- Working knowledge of welding processes including FCAW, GMAW, SMAW, and GTAW.
- Experience with production scheduling and workflow management.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office and production reporting systems.
- Ability to work under pressure while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience with API, AWS, or AISC fabrication standards.
- Previous experience in heavy industrial, marine, civil, energy, or petrochemical fabrication.
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
- OSHA 30 certification (preferred).
