Job description

Locations: Houston, Chicago, New York

At EY, we’re all in to shape your future with confidence.

We’ll help you succeed in a globally connected powerhouse of diverse teams and take your career wherever you want it to go. Join EY and help to build a better working world.

When our clients are facing complex governance, technology, or technical implementation issues, they look to us to set it right. Whether a system conversion has been miscalculated, or they simply don’t have the knowledge in the right area of the commodities market, we provide the answers to the big questions nobody else can.

The opportunity

Our commodities markets team is a national competency that sits within our Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS) practice and is growing exponentially. Working across all industries, you’ll develop your career by communicating creative, strategic goals both internally and externally. It’s all about listening to and understanding our clients to give them a truly exceptional experience in a field where there really are no off‑the‑shelf recommendations.

Your key responsibilities

The nature of this role means no two projects will be the same. That means you’ll need to think on your feet and challenge existing practices to develop answers to complex issues. You’ll also be collaborating with audit and advisory colleagues across multiple service lines, so we’ll look to you to build relationships and identify opportunities for our clients to benefit from our knowledge in other areas. Regular travel will be required as you will be meeting with key clients, some of those being the most respected in their fields.

Skills and attributes for success
  • Consulting with clients on complex commodities risk, asset and derivative valuations
  • Collaborating with partners, senior managers and clients to influence strategy around commodity markets, balancing risk and client expectations
  • Ensuring our Engagement team thoroughly understands our clients’ unique needs, ambitions and expectations
  • Building relationships with colleagues across multiple service lines to provide seamless integrated service
  • Managing performance and identifying opportunities to improve our products and processes
To qualify for the role you must have
  • A bachelor's degree in economics, mathematics, finance, information technology, accounting or related field and 5-8 years of work experience
  • US CPA licensure in your work state
  • Direct experience with commodity procurement, trading or valuation processes from an operational perspective, with a focus on middle- and back‑office operations
  • Experience with accounting for derivative and hedging activities
  • Strong working knowledge of commodity markets, instruments, and regulatory pronouncements
  • A basic understanding of financial modeling for commodity transactions
  • A proven record of excellence when managing, mentoring and improving a team of high‑performing colleagues
  • The confidence to provide expertise in deal structuring, valuation, and market drivers in the energy markets
  • The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary
  • Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver’s license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations
Ideally, you’ll also have
  • A master's degree in accounting, economics, finance, mathematics or related discipline
  • Internal or External Audit experience in a large firm
What we look for

We are interested in versatile people with the ability to take on new responsibilities and listen to clients to get things done. We are not just looking for technical accounting experience — we are after genuinely interesting people with the ability to build relationships, negotiate and think in unique and creative new ways. If you are a confident leader with a curious mind and the ability to solve complex issues, this role is for you.

What we offer you

At EY, we’ll develop you with future‑focused skills and equip you with world‑class experiences. We’ll empower you in a flexible environment, and fuel you and your extraordinary talents in a diverse and inclusive culture of globally connected teams.

  • We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business. The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $112,700 to $206,500. The base salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $135,200 to $234,800. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
  • Join us in our team‑led and leader‑enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 40‑60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
  • Under our flexible vacation policy, you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances. You’ll also be granted time off for designated EY Paid Holidays, Winter/Summer breaks, Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well‑being.
