Job summary

Mountain Lakes School District is seeking an HVAC/R Maintenance Technician to inspect, maintain, and repair school HVAC/R systems and related equipment.

You will perform preventive maintenance on boilers, rooftops, heat pumps, air-handling units, and controls, diagnose issues, and respond to service requests, including after hours.

The role requires NJ licenses, EPA 608, and 3–5 years experience; you will work with staff and contractors in a safety-conscious public school setting.

Qualifications

  • Possess a valid Universal (EPA) 608 Certification.
  • Possess a valid NJ HVAC/R license.
  • Possess a valid low pressure boiler license.
  • Possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.
  • 3–5 years' experience as HVAC/R Technician.
  • Working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS).
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair HVAC/R equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, test data and manufacturers specifications.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and electronic HVAC/R system issues.
  • Monitor environmental conditions and respond to heating and cooling service requests.
  • Maintain records of inspections, repairs, and materials used.
  • Respond to HVAC/R emergencies and service calls, including after hours.
  • Work with district staff and outside contractors on repairs, installations, inspections, and projects.
  • Ensure work complies with safety requirements, codes, manufacturer specs, and district policies.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas in safe condition.
  • Assist with other facilities and maintenance duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair HVAC/R systems and related equipment.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on boilers, furnaces, rooftop units, heat pumps, air-handling units, chillers, pumps, exhaust systems, refrigeration equipment, and controls.
  • Diagnose electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and electronic HVAC/R system issues.
  • Monitor building environmental conditions and respond to heating and cooling service requests.
  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, maintenance activities, and materials used.
  • Respond promptly to HVAC/R emergencies and service calls, including outside normal work hours when required.
  • Work with district staff and outside contractors on repairs, installations, inspections, and projects.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with applicable safety requirements, building codes, manufacturer specifications, and district policies.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Assist with other facilities and maintenance duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Possess a valid Universal (EPA) 608 Certification.
  • Possess a valid HVAC/R New Jersey license.
  • Possess a valid low pressure black seal boiler license
  • Possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.
  • Possess at least (3 - 5) years' experience as a working HVAC/R Technician.
  • Working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS)
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair various types of Commercial HVAC/R equipment.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, test data and manufacturers specifications.
  • Ability to work independent or in a team environment while performing precise, effective and safe repairs/installations to various types of HVAC/R equipment.
Work Environment

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature and air quality consistent with industry standards. Job responsibilities may require both inside and outside assignments. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Occasional after-hour work may be required. Must be able to work under stressful conditions, in a fast-paced, deadline oriented environment, while maintaining a positive, customer service approach to problem solving.

Physical Requirements

Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 50 pounds with assistance), reaching, climbing, squatting, stooping, crawling, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required.

Education And Experience
  • High school diploma (highly desirable) or equivalent training.
  • Knowledge of plant operation and maintenance; cleaning ventilation; proper handling of hazardous materials.
  • Minimum experience as determined by the board.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Willingness to work overtime/on weekends/shifts is highly desirable.
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license.
  • Good physical health and ability to perform assigned tasks.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • All legal requirements necessary to work in a public school district in the State of New Jersey.
Terms Of Employment
  • Twelve month work year.
  • Salary as established by the Board of Education, per MLEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Schedule to be determined by the Board of Education.
  • FLSA: Non-exempt.
  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of non-certified staff.
  • Must meet all legal requirements including criminal history background check, as set forth by State Law and/or the Board of Education.
