Job summary

Legacy Manufacturing in Marion, Iowa, is seeking an extrusion machine operator to support the production of multi-layer premium hose. You will set up and run extrusion equipment, follow ISO work instructions, and ensure changeovers are efficient while maintaining product quality.

The role requires forklift qualification, ability to read orders, and adherence to PPE and safety protocols. Training will cover extrusion equipment and Lockout/Tagout procedures, with a focus on teamwork and accurate

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current forklift qualification.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders.
  • Learn and remember warehouse bin locations.
  • Self-directed with strong communication skills.
  • Trained and authorized on extrusion equipment and Lockout/Tagout.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate extrusion equipment to produce multi-layer premium hose (inner, mid and cover layers over braided reinforcement).
  • Follow ISO standard work instructions and verify correct orders/materials are being run.
  • Perform equipment care, cleaning, and submit repairs as needed.
  • Ensure all changeovers are correct and efficient.
  • Disassemble/reassemble dies; change screen packs and spiral thread packs.
  • Unload completed reels, load empty reels, and label/stage finished reels.
  • Complete required quality checks and production records; adjust process to stay within spec.
  • Obtain necessary supplies and maintain stock readiness.
  • Assist in training coworkers to operate and troubleshoot machines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace; communicate issues to supervisor.

Job description

Extrusion machine operators provide support to extrusion manufacturing operations to ensure a consistent, standardized manufacturing process is established and followed. Extrusion operators are essential to the making of thermoplastic materials, a process in which extrusion machines heat the material so that it becomes moldable before letting it cool to a final specification. An extrusion operator is responsible for setting up and controlling extrusion machines and maintaining their cleanliness and efficiency.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: includes the following.Follow work orders per ISO standard work instructions, including:Verify correct orders/material are being run (style, color, stamp, labeling, packaging)Set up and operate equipment to produce multi-layer premium hose (inner, mid and cover layers over braided reinforcement)Perform operator-level equipment care and cleaning, and submit repairs to Maintenance through MaintainX; Lockout/Tagout and any work inside guarding are performed by authorized personnel onlyEnsure all changeovers are correct and efficientEnsure created products meet required specificationsDisassemble, clean and reassemble dies, and change screen packs and spiral thread packsUnload completed reels, load empty reels, and label and stage finished reelsComplete required quality checks and production records, and adjust the process to keep product within specificationObtain all necessary supplies and ensure all supplies are in place when neededCollaborate with coworkers to determine work allocation, tasks, and execution timelinesAssist in the training of coworkers to operate and troubleshoot various manual and automated machinesProactively communicate key information to shift leadsScan and complete work orders, put away finished goods, and move and rotate stock (FIFO) using an RF scannerStop production and notify the Supervisor of any non-conforming material, equipment fault, or unsafe conditionMaintain a clean and organized workspaceRequired QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent requiredCurrent qualification to operate a forkliftAbility to use an RF scannerAbility to read and understand work ordersAble to learn and remember warehouse bin locationsSelf-directed and independent with strong communication skillsTrained and authorized on extrusion equipment and Lockout/Tagout before independent operationAbility to wear and work in extrusion-area PPE for a full shift, including heat-resistant gloves, face shield or safety glasses, sleeves and cut-resistant glovesAbility to follow standard work instructions and to complete quality records accurately and legiblyPreferred QualificationsAssociate's degree in technical, manufacturing, industrial, or engineering technology fieldPrevious experience with braiders, cutters, dies, pullers, accumulators and inline gauge measurementFamiliarity with statistical process controlExperience with multi-layer extrusion and with reading inline tube size and reel weight measurement systemsPrevious extrusion machine operation experience0-1 year of relevant experiencePhysical RequirementsAbility to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environmentAbility to stand for long periods of timeAbility to lift, push, pull and move up to 55 lbs.Ability to use hoists, clamp trucks, and other designated lifting equipment for dies, reels and spiral thread packsAbility to work near hot surfaces and molten compound while wearing heat-resistant PPEAbility to work in both warm and cool environmentsAbility to use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objectsAbility to react quickly using hands, fingers, or feetAbility to make fast, repeated movements of fingers, hands, and wristsAbility to move arms and legs quicklyAbility to use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tiredAbility to be physically active for long periods without getting tired or out of breathTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
