JOB DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State College of Engineering is seeking an Experimental Machinist (CNC) to join their team. Responsibilities include:

  • Fabricate and construct various shapes from drawings, sketches, verbal instructions, or own design, using materials such as steel, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, and exotic materials.
  • Perform machining operations with high precision using lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and other equipment, with minimal supervision.
  • Program CNC machines, including both lathe and mill, using DOS and editing programs.
  • Create CNC programs from blueprints or CAD input with CAM software.
  • Set up and operate CNC equipment with basic programming techniques.
  • Modify existing programs via Manual Input (MDI).
  • Assist and train other machinists in CNC programming using personal computers.
  • Perform metal fusion operations such as soldering, brazing, arc welding, inert gas welding, oxygen-acetylene welding, and spot welding on various metals.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students on experimental equipment design, modification, and construction.
  • Assist in rebuilding used laboratory apparatus as directed.
  • Perform carpentry tasks from prints or verbal instructions, including layout, cutting, assembly, and finishing.
  • Maintain and repair shop equipment, report deficiencies.
  • Fabricate sheet metal parts, including shearing, bending, and assembly.
  • Oversee the student shop, including safety orientation, instruction, inventory, and maintenance.
  • Ensure safety and proper operation of the shop environment.
  • Perform plastic work such as cutting, bending, molding, and gluing, and polish surfaces.
  • Operate university vehicles for project or supply transportation.
  • Perform incidental plumbing and electrical work related to laboratory research.
  • Assist with fiberglass work and mold construction.
  • Report safety violations and maintain a clean work area.

Job Requirements: Advanced shop mathematics, reading complex drawings, specifications, charts, and using various measuring instruments. Equivalent to an accredited apprenticeship or high school plus two years of technical college. 4-5 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Days Off: Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Note: Operation of a motor vehicle is required, with a valid driver’s license and successful motor vehicle records check.
