Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by those assigned to this classification. They are not exhaustive.

Clinical Practice
  • Provides independent care of unit-specific patient population; serves as Clinical Resource for others, utilizes and integrates evidence into practice, and performs unit roles such as arrest team for ICU or triage for ED.
  • Accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care.
  • Accountable to peers for the advancement of unit practice, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.
  • Serves as a clinical expert and professional resource for unit nurses, teaching informally or formally.
  • Advances clinical practice on the unit and consistently integrates evidence into practice.
Service & Quality
  • Leads efforts to address Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI) improvement opportunities; develops, implements, and evaluates action plans.
  • Leads performance improvement initiatives by designing, implementing, evaluating, and disseminating results.
  • Monitors safety standards and contributes to improvement plans.
  • Coaches CNI/CNIIs on performance improvement and evidence-based practice.
  • Complies with and leads regulatory activities.
  • Leads unit-level Performance Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, or research projects using a recognized model.
Unit Operations
  • Performs charge role when scheduled and coaches new charge nurses.
  • Oversees unit orientation program and plans clinical experiences.
  • Serves as unit steward (liaison for lab, nutrition, pharmacy).
  • Mentors and coaches nurses to advance development and maintain competencies.
  • Models and holds peers accountable to Health Work Environment guidelines.
  • Orients nurses to unit-level governance structure and councils.
Professional Development
  • Serves as expert preceptor, coach, and mentor to new nurses, students, and preceptors.
  • Mentors and coaches unit leaders or those on councils or governance initiatives.
  • Leads unit processes for development of ancillary personnel and peer review processes.
  • Actively engages in own practice advancement.
Patient Safety
  • Ensures patient safety in job functions and through participation in safety initiatives.
  • Takes action to correct observed risks.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate authority.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates them.
Education & Experience
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Maryland, or eligibility via Compact agreements.
  • BSN or Conferred BSN required as of July 1, 2013.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Relevant clinical work experience related to the unit.
  • Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education every two years.
  • Member of a professional organization.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Current and active specialty certification, or recent matriculation/completion of a degree or certificate program (≥12 credits) within the past 24 months.
  • Formal teaching within the past 24 months, or membership on a professional board or committee within the past 24 months.
  • Peer reviewer for a professional journal (≥2 / year) with validation.
  • Demonstrated ability to assume a clinical leadership role and to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems for patient information management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills for appropriate care across patient populations and age groups.
  • Highly effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Compensation

Full‑Time: Day Shift.

Pay Range: $39.35 – $54.05 per hour.

Other Compensation: Shift Differential.
