Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Bridge/Structural Engineer for our Washington, DC or Herndon, VA offices. You will work with the Transportation Team to analyze, design, and evaluate highway and rail structures under senior guidance.

You will perform calculations, develop models, prepare design plans and reports, and conduct field inspections. Collaboration with regulators and engineers is essential, with emphasis on safety and codes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline).
  • 3–5 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering with prior design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles and design/build processes.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in analysis, design, and evaluation of transportation structures under senior guidance.
  • Perform structural calculations for bridge components (superstructures, substructures, foundations).
  • Develop and maintain structural models and perform basic analyses.
  • Prepare bridge design plans, specs, and technical reports using CADD and digital tools.

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for Bridge/Structural Engineer for our Washington, DC or Herndon, VA office. Be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the analysis, design, and evaluation of highway, rail, pedestrian, and other transportation structures under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Perform structural engineering calculations for bridge components, including superstructures, substructures, foundations, bearings, joints, and miscellaneous structural elements.

  • Develop and maintain structural models using appropriate engineering software and perform basic structural analysis in accordance with applicable design standards.

  • Assist with the preparation of bridge design plans, details, specifications, technical reports, and other contract documents using CADD and digital delivery tools.

  • Field inspection and condition assessment of bridges, sign structures, culverts and retaining walls.

  • Preparation of quantity and cost estimates.

  • Review of drawings to assure compliance with design intent and specifications.

  • Research and apply applicable design codes, standards, specifications, and owner criteria, including AASHTO, AREMA, state DOT, and other agency requirements.

  • Assisting more experienced engineers with broader engineering activities.

  • Preparation of technical studies, reports, and design document packages.

  • Assist with the evaluation, rehabilitation, repair, and load rating of existing bridge structures.

  • Participate in bridge inspections and field investigations; collect field data, measurements, photographs, and observations and assist in documenting existing conditions.

  • Assist with the preparation of inspection reports, load rating reports, technical memoranda, and rehabilitation recommendations.

  • Assist with development and scoping of small‑to‑medium‑sized projects.

  • Able to work with data, create meaningful graphs and interpretation of data along with engineering judgement.

  • Assist senior engineers and project managers in developing design alternatives, evaluating technical solutions, and documenting recommendations.

  • Participate in project meetings and communicate technical information clearly with project team members, clients, and other stakeholders.

  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.

  • Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, sketches, calculations, and 2D/3D illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.

  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction.

  • Complete training on assigned tasks.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).

  • 3 to 5 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior structural or civil design experience.

  • Engineer in Training Certification.

  • Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues.

  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.

  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.

  • Knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.

  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.

  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

  • Experience with discipline‑specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, CSi Bridge or Midas or LARSA 3D).

  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineering License.

  • Master's Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.

  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

  • Knowledge of coding in python.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $94,400 - $128,000

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant's sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
