Job Summary

As an Experienced Mechanical Engineer at BPMI, you will work under limited supervision and perform moderately complex critical technical functions to execute BPMI's mission in areas including but not limited to performing engineering evaluations and analyses and making engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks. Cognizant areas may include planning, designing, modeling, analyzing, documenting, and testing of nuclear, mechanical, structural or electrical components, systems and equipment and facilities. Work may include chemical or materials evaluations, design and manufacturability reviews, developing specifications, operations support, safety analysis, vibration analysis, manufacturing surveillance, and evaluation of procedures and systems for quality control. This position requires knowledge and application of engineering techniques, principles and practices employed in the area of assignment.

Essential Duties
  • Prepare project plans to accomplish assigned work.
  • Establish, track, and influence progress against schedule and performance goals and provide periodic status updates to management, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Resolve technical, logistical, and funding issues in area of cognizance.
  • Prepare specifications for the design, testing, and qualification of new equipment or upgrades of existing equipment.
  • Provide technical support and oversight for field operations.
  • Team with other engineers performing related phases of the technical work to ensure integration of activities and plans.
  • Mentor and train lower-level employees.
  • Perform analytical evaluations which may include the development and application of computer models and resolution of issues.
  • Prepare revisions to technical manuals, reports, or procedures in accordance with NR Program quality standards.
  • Initiate, design, develop, and support the execution and implementation of engineering research and design projects.
  • Conduct technical negotiations with suppliers; conduct production reviews and quality surveillance; review and approve supplier designs and supporting technical reports on assigned components and equipment; develop and implement methods to improve supplier performance.
  • Perform design for affordability reviews and prepare cost estimates; perform analyses and evaluations of supplier designs for material suitability, reliability, and integrity.
  • Prepare letters to the Government providing technical information, recommending approval of technical actions, or obtaining approval of funding.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and manufacturing or test procedures to verify supplier compliance with contract and design requirements.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or other related engineering degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced degrees (e.g., Master's, Ph. D.) may be considered as a partial substitute for required experience, depending on the relevance to the position, but may not fulfill the entire experience requirement.
  • Requires a security clearance;however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.
Preferred Job Requirements
  • Experience in project engineering or design engineering with some experience or familiarity in one or more of the following areas: manufacturing, welding,specification preparation, structural analysis, fluid flow, mechanical design, vibration analysis,or field support.
  • Effective technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills, creative and innovative, challenges the status quo, willing to push the envelope and think outside the box.
  • Experience influencing internal and external stakeholders to drive execution of work on-time and on-budget.
