The Hotel Controller is responsible for overseeing the hotel and restaurant accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, and effective cash management. The Controller partners with hotel leadership and department heads to monitor financial performance and support operational decision-making.
This position oversees one accounting team member and serves as the primary accounting resource for the hotel.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including daily revenue reconciliation, cash and credit card reconciliation, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
- Manage the monthly financial close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and financial statement preparation and review.
- Maintain financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and USALI, including proper classification of hotel revenues and expenses.
- Prepare and monitor the hotel's annual budget and routinely update financial forecasts.
- Monitor cash flow, banking activity, and working capital requirements.
- Review financial results with department heads and hotel leadership, including budget-to-actual and forecast variances.
- Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Oversee the hotel's accounting systems and financial reporting structure.
- Manage the accounting and finance functions within hotel operating systems, including M3, Toast, Mews, and other applicable platforms.
- Ensure proper integration and mapping of operational system data into the accounting system and USALI financial statements.
- Supervise, support, and develop one accounting team member.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax professionals, lenders, and other third parties as needed.
- Review and manage monthly hotel and restaurant inventories.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, systems, and controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Hospitality, or related field preferred.
- 5-8+ years of progressive accounting experience; hotel accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Prior Hotel Controller or hotel accounting management experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and USALI.
- Experience with month-end close, financial statement preparation, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and reconciliations.
- Experience with hotel accounting and operating systems such as M3, Toast and Mews preferred.
- Strong Excel and accounting software skills.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and partner effectively with hotel leadership and department heads.
