Job summary

Mortenson Construction is seeking an experienced Field Engineer for our Civil group. The role requires coordinating with staff at all levels and traveling nationwide to project sites, with rotations home every 3 weeks for 5 days.

The candidate can be based anywhere in the United States. Responsibilities include pre-construction support, submittal/RFI management, design evaluation, mobilization prep, QA/QC, and coordination of DFW activities while supporting subcontractors and suppliers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
  • Previous internship experience is a plus.
  • Detail orientation to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Basic understanding of construction law and business practices.
  • Strong teamwork, initiative, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Positive attitude and customer service orientation.
  • Current driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Pre-Construction support and coordinate submittals and RFIs.
  • Evaluate design documents and distribute to necessary parties.
  • Support mobilization with turnover binder templates and kickoff prep.
  • Manage QA/QC and inventory as materials arrive on site.
  • Coordinate DFW prep meetings, inspections, and punch lists.
  • Assist in drafting subcontracts and purchase agreements.
  • Support closeout processes and update submittal registers.
  • Contribute to safety audits and Mortenson's Zero Injury program.

Job description

SUMMARY

Mortenson is seeking an experienced Field Engineer in their Civil group with the ability to interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever‑changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive, and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The Field Engineer will support and complete the full cycle of field coordination issues with team members, subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers.

Note: This position will travel anywhere throughout the United States 100% of the time to various project locations across the United States (with regular rotations home every 3 weeks for 5 days). This person can be based anywhere in the United States.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide Pre-Construction support
    • Manage the submittal and RFI processes for specific definable features of work (DFW), utilizing PMA and other Project Connect programs completely to closure
    • Evaluate project design and engineering documents, managing their organization and distribution to necessary parties
    • Conduct advanced research on living arrangements for project team members
  • Perform project‑specific tasks in preparation for the team mobilizing to the site
    • Prepare turnover binder templates
  • Assist with the preparation of Pre‑Mobilization Kickoff meetings
    • Compile, contact, and arrange for short‑form subcontracts with local entities at the project site
    • Power, trailers, housing, local subcontractors, etc.
    • Assist in drafting subcontracts and purchase agreements
    • Review and utilize the Best Practice Database for SWIs, quality documents, prep meetings, etc.
  • Manage all aspects necessary for Construction support
    • Manage the quality assurance & quality control process as delineated in the Project Quality Plan
    • Manage the inventory process as materials arrive to the site: inspection, offload, receiving, and storage
    • Coordinate DFW prep meetings, initial inspections, follow‑up inspections, punch list final inspections
    • Assist Project Manager and Project Superintendents as needed regarding material and equipment management (pickup trucks, rented/owned equipment, coordinate the equipment facility)
    • Manage mechanical, electrical, and plumbing coordination drawings, shop and as‑built drawings
    • Coordinate the creation of lift and formwork drawings
    • Manage production logs for work put in place (self‑performed or subcontracted)
    • Track Event Management incidents regarding Safety or Quality in DFW responsibilities
  • Administer Closeout processes
    • Compile turnover documentation for specific DFW and transfer to customer per the project‑specific quality and TSO plan
    • Assist Project Engineer and Project Manager with getting contract documents closed out with subcontractors and suppliers
    • Support the final inspections and punch list process with the customer for specific DFW responsibilities
    • Provide periodic updates of the submittal register to the customer or architect
  • Other duties as assigned, including:
    • Participate in project safety audits and Mortenson's Zero Injury Safety Program
    • Determine alternative work methods as needed
    • Maintain schedule of timelines and follow through until completion
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Engineering, or another science or mathematics‑related degree, or an equivalent combination of education and substantial technical/field experience over multiple years
  • Previous related internship experience a plus
  • Detail orientation sufficient to organize and effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Basic understanding of construction law and generally accepted business practices
  • Strong teamwork orientation, initiative, communication, and problem‑solving skills
  • Proven positive and professional attitude and customer service skills
  • Current driver’s license

The base pay range for this role is $78,800 - $98,500. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%). This position is eligible for Mortenson's incentive plan.

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
