Position: Deckhand

A deckhand, under the direction of the mate, will perform any combination of the following duties:

  1. Handle lines to moor the vessel to dock, locks, or another vessel.
  2. Rig towing lines.
  3. Sweep decks using a broom, brush or mop.
  4. Stand lookout watches while the vessel is underway.
  5. Load or unload materials and supplies from docks or other vessels.
  6. Paint decks and superstructure of the vessel using a chipper, scraper, and/or brush, paint roller, or spray gun.
  7. Lubricate machinery and equipment.
  8. Splice and repair wire cables and ropes using hand tools.
  9. Fuel equipment.
  10. Examine cables that hold barges and vessels in tow and, using a ratchet, tighten cables to ensure barges and vessel are snug.
  11. Check barges and barge void tanks for leakage or damage.
