Job summary

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX is seeking an experienced RN for the Melanoma/Sarcoma unit. The role focuses on caring for adults and geriatrics with melanoma, sarcoma, and GI cancers, using complex regimens and high‑level monitoring.

Ideal candidate holds a BSN and Texas RN license with 12+ months of oncology or medical‑surgical inpatient experience. Shift is 7pm–7am with 26 weekend shifts per year. Comprehensive benefits are provided.

  • ACLS and PALS certifications required; OCN is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Document care and discharge planning; ensure continuity of care.
  • Access and update information in electronic medical records; support patient education.

Job description

The Melanoma/Sarcoma unit is a 25-bed medical oncology unit providing care to adult and geriatric patients ranging in age from 18 - 95. Four monitored beds are designated for melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, sarcoma, cervical, ovarian, thoracic and pancreatic cancer patients receiving high-dose bolus interleukin-2 and/or targeted cellular therapy requiring cardiac monitoring. Primary populations treated include: melanoma, sarcoma and GI patients receiving complex chemotherapeutic and bio-immunotherapeutic regimens and all solid tumor cancer patients receiving immune effector cell therapy.

Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, an RN license and at least twelve months of recent RN experience in Oncology and/or a Medical Surgical Inpatient setting.

Shift will be 7pm - 7am and 26 out of 52 weekend shifts per year.

Essential Job Functions

Function- Manages patient outcomes by providing, coordinating and supporting clinical aspects of direct patient care across the continuum of care.

Scope- Impacts quality of patient care, patient outcomes and use of resources in a designated area in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area. Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and multidisciplinary team.

  • Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.
  • Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies. Participates in data collection for current studies.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies. Documents care according to established standards.
  • Accesses, inputs and retrieves information from computer systems.
  • Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education and coordination of services. Acts as a patient and family advocate in order to uphold patient rights.
  • Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.

Education
  • Required: Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree Nursing.
Work Experience
  • Required: One year of Clinical RN experience.
  • Preferred: At least two years of Clinical RN experience.
Licences and Certifications
  • Required: RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license. Upon Hire and
  • Required: ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire and
  • Required: PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support If working in the following department: Nrsg Post Anesthesia Care Unit (600160). Upon Hire
  • Preferred: OCN - Oncology Nurse Certification Upon Hire
  • Preferred: Certification in specialty practice area. Upon Hire

Other requirements: All clinical nurses with less than one year of registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program.
