Job summary

NSF NOIRLab is seeking an Assistant Queue Observer to support the NEID spectrograph operations at WIYN. You will work with scientists, engineers, and observatory staff to execute observations, calibrate instruments, and maintain logs for efficient scheduling.

The role emphasizes hands-on instrumentation, real-time plan adjustments, and cross-training in WIYN telescope operations, with opportunities to contribute to engineering tests and verification projects. Fluency in English is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Astronomy, Physics, Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.
• Experience with astronomical observing, scientific instrumentation, or related technical equipment.
• Strong physics/engineering background and ability to operate complex instrumentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Execute queue-scheduled observations using the NEID spectrograph at the WIYN 3.5-meter Telescope.
• Operate and monitor the NEID spectrograph and related systems during observing shifts.
• Perform nightly and daytime instrument calibrations.
• Evaluate instrument performance through data quality checks and quick-look analysis.
• Adjust observing plans in real time based on weather and priorities.
• Maintain observing logs and status documentation.
• Support day and night operations of the NEID instrument and subsystems.
• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues affecting observations.
• Assist with maintenance, commissioning, and verification projects.
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers on improvements and development.
