Job summary

The Existential Risk Laboratory (XLab) at the University of Chicago seeks a Project Associate to manage day-to-day operations, student projects, and communications. The role supports leadership, administration, and program grants, with funding tied to external grants.

Responsibilities include coordinating fellowship logistics, event planning, and outreach; assisting with grant proposals; and supporting students and staff with research activities. In-person at UChicago.

Qualifications

• Education: college or university degree in related field.
• Work experience: < 2 years in a related job discipline.
• Certifications: ---
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field.
• Experience in university, research institute, or nonprofit setting.
• Strong writing ability for websites/communications.
• Knowledge of AI, AI safety, national security policy and norms, or related fields.
• Experience as a teaching assistant or evaluating student work.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates the logistical and administrative aspects of XLab programs.
• Plans and executes XLab workshops and events, including venue setup and speaker coordination.
• Supports student researchers in planning and organizing their research activities.
• Identifies students with potential and connects them with opportunities, fellowships, and mentors.
• Creates engaging announcements and content for XLab communications.
• Tracks program and grant spending with the Financial Administrator.
• Serves as first point of contact for external inquiries.
