Position Summary

The Exhibition Designer will collaborate to create specialized exhibition designs that support the museum’s mission and curatorial vision. The role includes technical concept design, presentation materials, production oversight, and close work with internal teams and external vendors.

Responsibilities

• Understand base‑building conditions and exhibition wall construction (MEP, structural capacities, fire protection, lighting, ceilings, floors) to inform future gallery renovations.
• Coordinate with Facilities and Operations staff to determine infrastructure parameters and secure approvals for outdoor installations in the park and garden.
• Produce design documentation (drawings, floor plans, detail drawings, case lists, schedules) for internal reviews and vendor construction bids.
• Act as liaison with external vendors, contractors, and design consultants to ensure code compliance and ADA accessibility standards.
• Work with the Architect of Record and fabricators on LADBS submissions and approvals.
• Manage project schedules, prioritize design deliverables, and oversee graphics production (printing, silk‑screening, fabrication) with external vendors; coordinate installation with Collections Management.
• Develop and lead processes for aesthetic standards—framing, plinths, furniture, casework—and oversee selection, procurement, and material sourcing.
• Select fabricators and specialty vendors for custom elements and manage installations.
• Construct architectural models and mockups; prepare 2D/3D assets in Vectorworks and Rhino.
• Collaborate with the Head of Exhibition Design on budget management for in‑gallery design, building, and construction.

• Casework & Custom Fabrication: platforms, mounts, framing strategies.
• Lighting: schemes meeting conservation standards.
• ADA Compliance: apply standards to ensure inclusive, navigable exhibitions.
• Preventive Conservation: strategies to protect exhibits.
• Graphics Development: lightbox graphics, photomurals, title walls, interpretive graphics.
