This role will be responsible for growing and developing the Central region while maintaining a profitable book of business through sound underwriting decisions, strong customer and broker partnerships, and effective use of underwriting tools, systems, and specialized resources.

The successful candidate will also mentor and guide less experienced underwriters within their area of expertise, providing regular coaching and feedback to support employee development. In addition, this role will participate in strategic projects that advance the goals of the department and the company.

  • Risk Selection and Underwriting: Evaluate, price, and underwrite complex construction risks by assessing account eligibility, exposures, coverage needs, program structure, pricing, terms, and conditions. Secure appropriate approvals, develop and present proposals, and negotiate favorable outcomes with agents and brokers.

  • Agent and Broker Relationship Management: Build and sustain strong partnerships with key agents and brokers through responsive service, proactive communication, site visits, renewal discussions, and a thorough understanding of their customers’ businesses. Develop a strong personal brand and maintain a high-quality, long-term pipeline of opportunities.

  • Portfolio Management and Growth: Manage a sizable, complex book of business with a focus on profitable growth, retention, diversification, and market share. Analyze portfolio performance, identify opportunities, execute targeted marketing strategies, and partner with preferred brokers to market and cross-sell products. Contribute insights on marketing plans, product opportunities, geographic priorities, service needs, and broker intelligence.

  • Underwriting File Quality and Compliance: Maintain thorough, well-documented underwriting files that demonstrate sound judgment and a clear decision-making process. Ensure account reviews, referrals, approvals, and signoffs comply with applicable regulations, underwriting guidelines, and delegated authority.

  • Technical Leadership and Talent Development: Mentor, coach, and provide technical guidance to underwriters and account analysts. Support the development of both underwriting expertise and professional skills, share best practices, and provide regular feedback to leadership regarding employee progress.

  • Continuous Improvement and Strategic Projects: Participate in department and company initiatives that improve processes, tools, service, and underwriting results. Contribute ideas, engage in problem-solving activities, and use continuous improvement practices to support team objectives.
