Job summary

The Santa Cruz County Office of Education seeks an Executive Director of Communications and Engagement to lead organization-wide communications, public affairs, and community engagement. The role reports to the County Superintendent and directs media relations, public information, and engagement initiatives to advance the district’s equity and public service priorities.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field, 7+ years in communications/public affairs, and at least 3 years

Qualifications

Seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications, public affairs, public information, community engagement, public administration, education, media relations, or a related field.
At least three (3) years of management or supervisory experience is required.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license and appropriate vehicle operation insurance.

Responsibilities

Plan, direct, integrate, and evaluate the Santa Cruz County Office of Education’s organization‑wide communications, public affairs, public information, community engagement, student leadership, and family engagement programs and services.
Serve as a senior advisor to the County Superintendent, County Board of Education, and executive leadership on communications strategy, public affairs, community relations, emerging issues, crisis response, and public transparency.
Direct media relations, oversee responses to public records requests, and build relationships with community partners and government/education leaders.
