Job summary

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools seeks an experienced executive director for the School Performance area. The role oversees principals, supports schools, and aligns district priorities with the SIP to drive student achievement. Extensive leadership and policy expertise are required.

The position reports to the Assistant Superintendent of School Performance and emphasizes data-driven decisions, cross-department collaboration, and staff development across PreK–12.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Master's degree in School Administration or related field required.
  • NC Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of five years' district-level or building administration experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Lead, manage and supervise assigned programs/staff in the district.
  • Provide day-to-day support and supervision of PreK-12 schools assigned to the performance area.
  • Provide leadership and support for principals and assistant principals.
  • Coach/mentor principals, teachers, literacy facilitators, and academic facilitators.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to discuss academic achievement and performance area needs.
  • Oversee performance area functions to ensure policy compliance with district plan.
  • Represent the Superintendent at district, state, and governmental functions when necessary.

General Definition of Work

The performance area executive director, under minimal supervision, performs senior level work with extensive decision-making discretion coordinating instructional support services to assist schools in achieving desired student achievement goals. This position will support the assigned performance area to serve the needs of the schools and community. Employee will oversee principals in assigned areas to resolve school-based concerns and problems. This position is responsible for assisting principals and teachers in striving for maximum student achievement. Employee performs advanced and supervisory work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures related to a wide variety of programs and activities under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of School Performance.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Lead, manage and supervise assigned programs/staff in the district
  • Provide day-to-day support and supervision of PreK-12 schools assigned to the performance area
  • Provide leadership and support for principals and assistant principals
  • Serve as a facilitator in identifying and securing expertise and support services to principals, school based support staff and teachers to help them increase student achievement
  • Serve as a coach/mentor to individual principals/assistant principals/teachers/literacy facilitators/academic facilitators
  • Assist building administrators with current and desired conditions regarding district priorities in their schools
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to discuss academic achievement, benchmarks and the performance area support needed to help schools reach desired academic goals
  • Assist the Assistant Superintendent of School Performance in overseeing the performance area functions to ensure compliance with district policy and the strategic plan
  • Serve as a representative of the Assistant Superintendent of School Performance at district, state, public and governmental functions when necessary and appropriate
  • Monitor fidelity of school implementation of district curriculum and program initiatives
  • Coordinate and collaborate with district and performance area staff to provide timely and appropriate professional development that supports the school improvement plan
  • Analyze data and prepare reports as needed/required ensuring every school meets their SIP goals and the district meets the targets in the strategic plan
  • Facilitate professional development and attend other related meetings as needed/required
  • Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
  • Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Comprehensive in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of public school system policies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements applicable to school systems
  • Comprehensive knowledge of staff development practices, procedures, and techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge on how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
  • Skilled in the use of current software to include word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing applications
  • Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needs
  • Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
  • Ability to develop and monitor a budget
  • Ability to direct and evaluate the work of others

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related area required
  • Master's degree in School Administration or related area required
  • NC Certification (Principal or Superintendent) preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience as building or district administrator preferred
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education
Special Requirements
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
