Job description

MassHire Springfield is looking for its next Executive Director: a leader who sees workforce development not as a service delivery function, but as economic strategy for Greater Springfield and Hampden County. This is a chance to shape how thousands of jobseekers build careers and how hundreds of employers build the workforce they need to grow, at a moment when the labor market is changing faster than most organizations can track it. Our outgoing Executive Director is retiring after years of steady leadership. We’re looking for someone who will build on that foundation while bringing fresh energy to community partnerships, staff leadership, and the way we use data to stay ahead of regional workforce trends.

Strategic & Organizational Leadership

Set the strategic direction for the Career Center in partnership with the Board of Directors and translate that strategy into operational reality across all programs and services. Maintain the long-term fiscal health of the organization, with primary oversight and signature authority for Career Center operations. Direct the organization’s finance, HR, and IT functions, and safeguard the Center against financial, legal, regulatory, and programmatic risk.

Community & Stakeholder Engagement

Serve as the face and voice of MassHire Springfield, cultivating relationships with the Hampden County Workforce Board, the Massachusetts Department of Career Services, elected officials, funders, and area employers. Represent the Center at the state and local level on funding, policy, and operational matters, and serve on key boards and committees that advance the organization’s mission. Build genuine, ongoing engagement with the local business community, not just as service recipients, but as partners in shaping what the Center offers.

Workforce Trends & Program Innovation

Track shifts in the regional labor market: emerging industries, in-demand skills, employer needs, and turn those insights into new services, program design, and strategic priorities. Lead the design and rollout of new initiatives and growth opportunities, while strengthening the programs that already work. Stay ahead of the technology and platforms, including social media and digital tools, that today’s jobseekers and employers actually use.

People & Culture

Build, motivate, and develop a staff team that reflects modern, human-centered leadership: clear expectations, real coaching, and a culture of collaboration rather than command-and-control. Supervise senior staff and lead the organization day to day, while creating a working environment that supports staff wellbeing alongside performance. Periodically review Center policies and procedures to keep pace with evolving regulatory requirements and best practice.

What You Bring

Master's degree in public administration, business administration, human services, or nonprofit management (or equivalent experience). 8+ years in a senior management role, ideally within a human services or mission-driven organization. A genuine passion for regional workforce development: you see the connection between a single jobseeker's success and the economic health of the whole community. Modern leadership instincts: comfortable delegating, coaching, and building consensus, not just directing. Cmfort with data: able to read labor market trends and translate them into decisions, not just reports. Strong public speaking and communication skills, including experience with elected officials and media. Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with the social media and business technology platforms used by today's employers and jobseekers. Maturity, independence, and the confidence to represent the organization at every level, from the front desk to the State House.
