The California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative (CHNSC) seeks an Executive Director to lead strategy, fundraising, and operations for CHNSC and CA Collab Action, a 501(c)(3)/(4) nonprofit. California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative Executive Director
The California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative (CHNSC) is a statewide grassroots organization that addresses health, workers' rights, environmental and reproductive justice, and other social issues faced by its low-income, female, Vietnamese immigrant and refugee workforce. Our mission is to mobilize the nail salon workforce to transform the health, safety, and working conditions across the industry, building a sustainable, thriving, and equitable community.
Using a multi-tiered approach that blends community organizing, grassroots policy advocacy, and community-based research, CHNSC builds power of the nail salon community to develop solutions that benefit the nail salon workforce, their families, small immigrant- and refugee-owned businesses, and their communities. Our vision is a world where the nail salon community is healthy, safe, and thriving.
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful planning and operations of CHNSC, a 501(c)(3) organization, and CA Collab Action, a 501(c)(4) organization. The Executive Director is accountable to the Steering Committee, staff, and nail salon worker and owner members, who provide critical strategic, executive, and thought leadership. The Executive Director leads and executes the strategic plan and serves as the primary fundraiser while overseeing fiscal operations, human resources, operations, communications, and program management. The Executive Director models and guides organizational culture and values, and is the main public face for CHNSC's mission.
Leadership, Strategy, and Management (20%)
Provide visionary leadership, establish long-term strategies, and oversee the implementation of CHNSC's 3-year strategic plan, aligning systems, resources, and accountability structures to advance its goals.
Ensure that CHNSC's programs advance strategic priorities, demonstrate impact, and meet applicable funder and compliance requirements.
Champion and model CHNSC's organizational values while promoting them within organizational policies and practices.
Build organizational leadership capacity by developing and empowering staff leaders, fostering team communication and cohesion, and supporting staff development.
Fundraising & Development (25%)
Set and lead a diversified fund development strategy to strengthen long-term financial sustainability and align fundraising with organizational priorities.
Establish and evaluate annual fundraising goals and priorities while ensuring successful implementation.
Cultivate and steward strong, consistent relationships with current and prospective funders, donors, and funding partners.
Oversee fund development systems and manage grant proposals and reports.
Communications & Narrative Strategy (10%)
Set the strategic direction for CHNSC's communications and organizational narrative, ensuring alignment with its mission, advocacy, fundraising, and visibility.
Serve as CHNSC's primary public facing representative while elevating the organization’s and staff leadership’s visibility in mainstream and ethnic media.
Ensure that the organization’s communications strategy aligns with internal and external organizational, fundraising, advocacy, and programming priorities.
Collaborations & Strategic Partnerships (15%)
Set and advance a strategic partnership agenda that expands CHNSC's influence, reach, resources, and impact.
Position CHNSC as a respected voice and strategic partner in state and national coalitions, partnerships, and movement spaces.
Serve as a spokesperson and thought leader on key advocacy issues, representing CHNSC through media, publications, panels, and other relevant platforms.
Financial Management & Sustainability (10%)
Provide strategic financial leadership to ensure CHNSC's long-term financial health, sustainability, and capacity to meet current and projected program growth.
Monitor annual budget and provide quarterly financial reports to the Steering Committee for approval.
Work closely with the fiscal sponsor to ensure appropriate financial protocols, risk management, and compliance with all applicable IRS, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations, and funder regulations.
Personnel Management (10%)
Ensure effective, equitable, and legally compliant human resources policies and practices that are aligned with CHNSC's fiscal sponsor.
Set organizational staffing priorities that support recruitment, retention, and leadership development
Hire, supervise, and conduct performance evaluations, and manage disciplinary and other personnel actions in accordance with CHNSC's fiscal sponsor's policies.
Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing work environment built on communication, trust, accountability, and shared purpose.
Steering Committee and Other Responsibilities (10%)
Serve as the primary organizational liaison to the Steering Committee, building strong relationships with current, new, and prospective Steering Committee members.
Facilitate effective decision-making by the Steering Committee including general oversight, strategic direction, accountability and fiscal oversight for the organization.
Perform other duties consistent with the responsibilities and strategic priorities of the Executive Director role, as assigned by the Steering Committee.

At least eight to ten years of senior or executive-level nonprofit leadership experience, including management, fundraising, and coalition building.
Ability to balance strategic and operational responsibilities, manage competing priorities, while successfully moving projects and campaigns forward.
Demonstrated collaborative leadership skills, including team building, facilitation, conflict resolution, and effectively guiding teams through periods of environmental, political or organizational changes.
Proven ability to foster an organizational culture that supports staff development, shared leadership, and organizational pride.
Demonstrated experience in fields of health justice, environmental justice, reproductive justice, racial justice, workers' rights, immigrant rights, and other social justice issues, with commitment to advancing the health, safety, and rights of salon workers and low wage workers.
Experience working with Southeast Asian, immigrant, and refugee communities.
Experience in organizing, advocacy, and government relations, with knowledge of the public policies and conditions affecting nail salon workers, owners, their families, and their communities.
Experience working in multiracial coalition and movement spaces to build solidarity and support collective action.
Demonstrated success as a fundraiser, including cultivating relationships and securing funding from individual donors, foundations, and government agencies.
Success and experience with proposal writing and grants management.
Knowledge of best practices in nonprofit operations and human resources management.
Experience in strategic planning, development, and monitoring performance and operations benchmarks.
Minimum eight to ten years of experience in nonprofit fiscal management, including budgeting, financial analysis, forecasting, and grant compliance.
Exceptional communication skills and ability to engage effectively with staff, Steering Committee, partners, funders, policy makers, and external stakeholders.
Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.
Proficiency with standard office and communication software and comfort working in a technology-enabled, multi-site environment.
Fluency in English is required.
Must be based in California or willing to relocate within an agreed‑upon timeframe.
Fluency or proficiency in Vietnamese.
Familiarity working with Vietnamese, Southeast Asian, immigrant, and/or refugee communities in California, particularly Orange County, Los Angeles County, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Residence near one of CHNSC’s two offices in Orange County or Oakland.

The Executive Director is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $130k - 165k annually, depending on experience and qualifications. CHNSC also provides a generous benefits package that includes:
