Job summary

Moore Humane Society in Southern Pines, NC, seeks an Executive Director to guide growth, operations, and community impact as it opens a new, state-of-the-art animal welfare campus by 2026. You will shape the future of animal welfare in Moore County through collaboration with the Board, staff, volunteers, donors, and partners.

This is a full-time role requiring strategic leadership, fundraising excellence, governance oversight, and a collaborative leadership style to oversee animal care,

Qualifications

• Executive or senior leadership experience in a nonprofit/animal welfare setting.
• Fundraising, donor cultivation, grant development, and building philanthropic partnerships.

Moore Humane Society is seeking a visionary, strategic, and compassionate Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter of growth and community impact. As the Society prepares to open its new, state-of-the-art animal welfare campus in Southern Pines, North Carolina, by the end of 2026, this leader will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of animal welfare in Moore County.

Executive Director Position Overview

The Executive Director will provide strategic leadership and oversight to all aspects of operations, including animal care and shelter services, financial management, fundraising, community engagement, human resources, and organizational development. Working closely with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners, the Executive Director will advance Moore Humane Society's mission while ensuring long-term organizational sustainability.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated executive or senior leadership experience in a nonprofit organization, animal welfare organization, or similarly complex mission-driven environment.
• Proven success in fundraising, donor cultivation, grant development, and building philanthropic partnerships.
• Experience developing and managing organizational budgets, financial planning, and fiscal oversight.
• Strong leadership and management skills with a track record of recruiting, developing, and retaining high-performing staff and volunteers.
• Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors, including strategic planning, governance support, and transparent communication.
• Exceptional written, verbal, and public speaking skills, with the ability to serve as the organization's primary ambassador.
• Experience building collaborative relationships with community organizations, government agencies, businesses, and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to lead organizational growth, manage change, and execute strategic initiatives.
• Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and fostering a welcoming environment for employees, volunteers, adopters, and community members.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and executive leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in animal sheltering, veterinary medicine, animal welfare, or related fields.
• Knowledge of shelter operations, animal care standards, and best practices in lifesaving programs.
• Experience overseeing or opening a new facility, managing a capital project, or leading a significant organizational expansion.
• Familiarity with nonprofit fundraising software, donor management systems, and data-driven decision-making.
• Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) designation or willingness to pursue certification.
