Job summary

Lake Humane Society in Mentor, Ohio seeks an Executive Director to lead our mission-driven nonprofit serving Lake County. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Public Administration or related field; equivalent leadership experience accepted.
  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management or related field is a plus.
  • Strong judgment, integrity, interpersonal and communication skills, financial and organizational acumen.

Responsibilities

  • Providing overall executive leadership and strategic direction for the organization.
  • Leading, developing and supporting professional staff and large volunteer community.
  • Overseeing shelter operations, veterinary wellness services, humane investigations, development, marketing, finance and administration.
  • Working with the Board of Directors to establish organizational priorities and implement strategic goals.
  • Developing and managing the organization's budget and ensuring sound financial stewardship.
  • Supporting and strengthening fundraising, donor development and community partnerships.
  • Serving as a visible and effective representative of Lake Humane Society throughout the community.
  • Ensuring strong organizational policies, regulatory compliance, risk management and human-resource practices.

Job description

Salary Range: $100,000–$120,000 | Full-Time, Exempt

Lead an organization that makes a difference throughout Lake County.

Lake Humane Society is seeking an accomplished, collaborative and community-minded

Executive Director to lead our organization into its next chapter.

Founded in 1937, Lake Humane Society is a private, independent nonprofit organization

dedicated to protecting animals and building connections between pets and people through

advocacy and education. We receive no government funding and are not funded or operated by a

national humane organization.

Today, Lake Humane Society is much more than an animal shelter. Our organization provides a

broad range of services to animals and people throughout Lake County, including animal

sheltering and adoption, veterinary wellness services, humane law enforcement, community

programs, education and outreach.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and provides overall leadership for a

multifaceted organization that includes 22 full-time employees and approximately 300

volunteers. Our professional team includes two full-time veterinarians supporting our

veterinary and wellness services and two full-time Humane Agents responsible for animalcruelty investigations and humane law enforcement throughout Lake County.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an executive leader.

Animal-welfare experience is welcome, but it is not required. We are interested in

accomplished leaders from the nonprofit, business, healthcare, association, community-service

and other sectors who have the experience and judgment necessary to lead a complex, missiondriven organization.

The successful candidate will provide strategic and operational leadership while working closely

with the Board of Directors, professional staff, volunteers, donors, community partners and other

stakeholders.

The Leader We're Seeking

Strong candidates will bring demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to manage

people, priorities and complex operations.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in several of the following areas:

  • Executive or senior-level organizational leadership
  • Leading and developing professional staff
  • Working effectively with a Board of Directors or governing body
  • Budgeting, financial management and organizational planning
  • Community relations and public communications
  • Strategic planning and organizational growth
  • Managing multiple programs or business functions
  • Building partnerships with community, business and governmental organizations

Nonprofit leadership experience is preferred but not required. Experience working with

volunteers is highly desirable.

Candidates do not need to be experts in veterinary medicine, animal sheltering or law

enforcement. The Executive Director's responsibility is to provide outstanding leadership to the

professionals who manage these specialized functions while ensuring that the entire organization

works effectively toward a common mission.

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or a related field, or an

equivalent combination of education and significant leadership experience will also be

considered. A master's degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management or a related

discipline is a plus.

Most importantly, we are seeking a leader with sound judgment, integrity, strong interpersonal

and communication skills, financial and organizational acumen, and the ability to inspire

employees, volunteers, donors and community partners.

Compensation

The anticipated salary range for this position is $100,000–$120,000, commensurate with

experience and qualifications.

provide care for approximately 1,500–2,000 animals, while providing programs and services

that strengthen the connection between people and pets throughout our community.

Humane Society receives no government funding and is not funded or operated by any national

humane organization.
