Job description

Habitat for Humanity Capital District seeks a collaborative, strategic, and mission-driven Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter of impact.

After more than a decade of stable executive leadership, Habitat enters this transition from a position of strength. The organization has built 185 homes for first-time homebuyers and earned a reputation as a regional leader in sustainable affordable housing.

Working alongside an engaged Board of Directors and a dedicated staff, the next Executive Director will have the opportunity to build upon this strong foundation while helping the organization grow its impact in an increasingly complex affordable housing landscape.

If you are energized by collaborative leadership, community partnerships and expanding access to affordable homeownership, we invite you to consider joining our team.

About Habitat for Humanity Capital District

Habitat for Humanity Capital District partners with families and communities to create affordable homeownership opportunities throughout Albany, Rensselaer and southern Saratoga Counties.

We believe everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home. Through innovative housing development, neighborhood investment, volunteer engagement, and partnerships with public, private and nonprofit organizations, we work to strengthen communities and expand opportunity.

Today's Habitat is more than a homebuilder. We are an experienced affordable housing developer managing multiple projects, public funding partnerships and community collaborations that create lasting neighborhood impact.

The opportunity

The Executive Director is responsible for providing strategic leadership, organizational management, financial stewardship and community representation.

This role offers the opportunity to:

  • Lead a respected nonprofit with a strong reputation throughout the Capital District.
  • Guide an experienced staff and work alongside an engaged Board of Directors.
  • Advance innovative affordable housing initiatives, including sustainable and energy-efficient construction.
  • Strengthen partnerships with municipalities, state agencies, lenders, foundations, businesses and community organizations.
  • Shape the organization's long-term strategy while expanding access to affordable homeownership.

Success in this role requires balancing vision with execution—thinking strategically while remaining grounded in the day-to-day realities of leading a complex nonprofit organization.

Key responsibilities

The Executive Director provides leadership across strategy, people, finances, partnerships, and housing impact.

Primary areas of leadership include:

  • Organizational strategy and Board partnership.
  • Staff leadership, operations, and organizational culture.
  • Financial stewardship, compliance, and risk management.
  • Resource development, community partnerships, and external relations.
  • Affordable housing development, homeowner services, and community impact.
Who we're looking for

We recognize that strong candidates may come from nonprofit leadership, affordable housing, community development, philanthropy, construction, public administration, or other mission-driven fields.

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader who:

  • Builds trust and authentic relationships.
  • Thinks strategically while effectively managing complex organizations.
  • Communicates clearly and inspires confidence among diverse audiences.
  • Navigates change with optimism, sound judgment and resilience.
  • Demonstrates financial and organizational management experience.
  • Is passionate about strengthening communities through affordable housing.
  • Actively demonstrates Habitat values:
  • Humility – We are part of something bigger than ourselves
  • Courage – We do what’s right, even when it is difficult or unpopular
  • Accountability – We take personal responsibility for Habitat’s mission
Preferred qualifications
  • Progressively responsible leadership experience in a nonprofit, public-sector, housing, community development, construction, or related setting.
  • Demonstrated strength in organizational leadership, financial oversight, partnership-building, and communication.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant leadership experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of affordable housing, real estate development, or community development.
