House of Ruth Maryland (HRM) is one of the nation’s leading intimate partner violence centers, dedicated to ending violence against women and their children by confronting the attitudes, behaviors, and systems that perpetuate it. HRM provides critical services to survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) through shelter, legal services, counseling, advocacy, and community education.
Position Summary
The Executive Director is the chief executive leader of House of Ruth Maryland and is responsible for advancing the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides leadership across all areas of the agency – including strategy, operations, programs, advocacy, finance, fundraising, and community engagement. The ideal candidate is a transformational leader who brings a strong commitment to and belief in our vision “that every woman is safe in her own home” and has proven experience managing complex nonprofit organizations.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Lead the development and implementation of a long-term strategic plan in partnership with the Board and senior leadership team.
- Ensure HRM’s programs and strategic initiatives are aligned with its mission, vision, values, and community needs.
- Serve as a visionary and inclusive leader, staying attuned to trends in IPV, nonprofit best practices, and public policy.
Organizational Management
- Oversee all HRM operations, including programmatic, legal, residential, training, and clinical services.
- Implement programmatic and personnel policies and be responsible for employment, promotion, termination and supervision of all agency personnel in compliance with applicable laws and standards of service.
- Maintain compliance with rules, regulations, and federal/local laws in all the agency’s operations.
- Ensure an organizational culture that is trauma-informed and survivor-centered.
- Lead, mentor, and support a diverse team of staff and volunteers, fostering collaboration and accountability.
Fundraising & Development
- Work closely with the development and operations teams to expand and diversify HRM’s funding and revenue streams.
- Build relationships with donors, foundations, corporations, and government funders.
- Actively represent HRM at fundraising events and public engagements.
Financial Stewardship
- Oversee the organization’s financial health, including annual budgeting, financial planning, and monthly/quarterly reporting.
- Ensure strong fiscal controls and accountability in partnership with the CFO and Board Finance Committee.
- Present the annual budget for the Board of Directors for approval.
Community & Public Engagement
- Serve as the public face of HRM, articulating its mission and impact, to media, stakeholders, and the public.
- Build and maintain relationships with local and national partners, including government agencies, service providers, and advocacy organizations.
- Develop and implement public relations initiative including media exposure, advertising and marketing of educational materials and services.
- Promote advocacy for survivor-centered public policies at the local, state, and national levels.
Board Relations
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to support governance best practices and organizational sustainability.
- Provide timely and accurate information to the Board regarding organizational performance, challenges, and opportunities.
- Make recommendations to the Board of Directors of action to be taken in matters that may put the agency at risk financially, ethically or legally, or that might in any way severely affect the reputation of the agency.

Experience, Education, Certifications/Licenses
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in the nonprofit, public, or philanthropic sector.
- Proven success in organizational leadership, strategic planning, and team management.
- Experience in nonprofit fundraising and donor engagement.
- Strong financial and operational acumen, including budget oversight and resource management.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, social work, law, or related field.
- Experience working with trauma-informed, survivor-centered organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to addressing intimate partner violence and related social issues.
- Knowledge of the legal and policy landscape surrounding domestic violence and victim advocacy.
