JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Exceptional Children’s SED Teacher Assistant

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1. Associate Degree or 48 semester hours required;
  • 2. Knowledge of the learning styles and behavior of exceptional children;
  • 3. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form;
  • 4. Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships;
  • 5. Ability to operate a variety of instructional equipment and machines;
  • 6. Willingness to assist with personal care needs as required;
  • 7. Must hold a valid NC driver’s license and will be required to completerequirements for a NC bus driver’s license;
  • 8. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion;
  • 9. Must possess the visual acuity to do extensive reading, interpret writtenmaterial, and transfer written to oral communication;
  • 10. Must be able to withstand the rigorous physical activities as required in the classroom and/or outside the classroom setting.

REPORTS TO: Principal/Supervising Teacher

JOB GOAL: To provide assistance to the classroom teacher in the planning, organization and implementation of the instructional program.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the teacher in implementing each child’s Individual Education Program goals and objectives.
  • Assist in planning and preparing the learning environment, setting up centers, and preparing needed materials and supplies.
  • Assist students, as assigned by Principal, with personal care needs (feeding, toileting, etc.) and medical procedures for which trained.
  • Conduct learning exercises with small groups of students.
  • Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
  • Assist with the supervision of students to ensure safety at all times.
  • Alert the teacher to special needs of individual students.
  • Collect and display suitable material for educational displays.
  • Develop materials and group lessons to meet instructional objectivesdetermined by the teacher.
  • Correct students’ work under the teacher’s supervision.
  • Participate in discipline procedures and prescribe consequences for student behaviorunder teacher supervision.
  • Assisttheteacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing behavior or academicskills.
  • Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assignedin the absence of the teacher.
  • Help with general housekeeping tasks and to maintain a neat and organized classroom.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or the Building Principal.
  • Follow appropriate communication lines to discuss concerns- i.e.- teacher, principal, EC Program Staff.
  • Adhere to all policies of school and district.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of personally identifying information and all student records.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Exceptional Children’s Program Director.

SALARY: Edgecombe County Public Schools Classified Salary Schedule

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 months, or as determined by funding/program needs.

EVALUATION: Annually, Teacher Assistant Personnel Appraisal Instrument
