Job Description

Reports to: Principal

Term of Employment: 10 months

Salary: State Salary Scale

NATURE OF WORK: Under general supervision of the Building Principal and Special Education Director, the licensed special education teacher provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations. Work involves developing and implementing the Individual Education Program in classroom settings that are compatible with the student’s age and developmental level; developing lesson plans, adapting materials, and designing activities to assist EC students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals; and monitoring student’s progress and maintaining EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develops and implements an instructional plan compatible with school and system-wide curricular goals and the students’ Individual Education Program.
• Employs various teaching techniques, methods, and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
• Designs and implements annual Individualized Education Program (IEP) plans, including present levels of academic achievement, instructional goals, and required services.
• Provides research‑based specialized instruction to address instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP.
• Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
• Schedules and participates in team meetings, collaborating with child study team members and others to develop instructional goals and strategies.
• Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student’s IEP.
• Employs a variety of teaching methods to meet student needs, including the adaptation or development of materials.
• Monitors student behavior; maintains classroom discipline; deescalates inappropriate behaviors; teaches students appropriate behavioral strategies; restrains students when necessary; records and reports restrains.
• Assists disabled students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks they are unable to perform independently.
• Communicates with parents regarding their children’s educational progress via periodic written progress reports.
• Acts as a case coordinator for assigned students, consulting with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents to better understand and meet student needs.
• Conducts special education evaluations and annual reevaluations.
• Provides direction, supervision, and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.
• Completes all required district and state reports.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, and scissors, and to exert a negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. The role involves frequent standing and walking; physical demands are consistent with those for Light Work. Occasionally the employee will lift up to 50 lbs. and may need to assist students in physical activities.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Four‑year college or university degree.
• Major or 24 semester hours in the subject area to be taught.
• Passing score on Praxis II Test in the subject area to be taught (must have passed Praxis II for Elementary or Exceptional Education employment).
• Valid North Carolina teaching license/certificate, or ability to obtain one.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions; strong verbal communication skills; proficiency in mathematics including basic calculations and statistics; and ability to maintain a clean, orderly learning environment.
