Job summary

PRIME CONSTRUCTION GROUP, INC. in Central Florida is seeking an experienced Excavator Operator to operate heavy equipment safely, perform pre-operational checks, and support trenching and utility installations.

The ideal candidate has 3 years of excavator experience, trench safety certification, and strong ability to read field survey layouts, with a commitment to quality work on urban and municipal projects.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED or equivalent.
• Three (3) years experience as an Excavator Operator, preferably in urban areas.
• Knowledge reading locate markings and understanding of underground/utilities.
• Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.
• Ability to read and understand field survey layouts, policies, procedures and instructions.
• Trench safety certification.

Responsibilities

• Operate excavator/hoe and other heavy equipment safely.
• Perform daily maintenance and safety checks, including pre-operational checks.
• Ensure trench is excavated to proper depth/grade.
• Place water, storm and sanitary sewer pipes in excavation.
• Follow directions of ground crew for crane, gravel placement and grading.
• Operate on public roadways and residential areas with awareness of surroundings.
• Understand issues involving ground disturbance.
• Rigging of pipe and manhole components; ensure safe lowering procedures.
• Operate other heavy equipment and related duties as needed.
• Maintain high-quality work and stay productive.
• Be self-motivated and ambitious.
• Follow verbal and written instructions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Operate the excavator/hoe and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
• Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment, conducting pre-operational checks on equipment, and clean, lubricate and refill equipment as necessary.
• Ensure trench is excavated to the proper depth/grade.
• Responsible for placement of water, storm and sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
• Follow directions of ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement and grading.
• Operate Excavator/Hoe on public roadways and residential areas, maintaining proper awareness of one’s surroundings.
• Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
• Be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole barrels, etc. and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.
• Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required.
• Work in a productive and efficient manner while maintaining the highest level of quality work.
• Be self-motivated and ambitious.
• Be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

Qualifications, Education, Experience and Certifications

• High school diploma or G.E.D. or an equivalent combination of education and training
• Three (3) years experience as an Excavator Operator, preferably in Urban areas
• Knowledge reading locate markings and general understanding of underground and/or overhead utilities
• Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures including but not limited to back up procedures, use of flagmen and spotters, signage, incident reporting, required personal safety equipment and lifting of heavy loads
• Knowledge of equipment operation, cleaning and maintenance requirements
• Analytical and problem solving skills
• Effective communication skills (both listening and verbal)
• Ability to read and understand field survey layouts, policies, procedures and instructions
• Trench safety certification

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Will be exposed to outside weather conditions, be prepared for extreme heat and cold
• May at times be exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electric shock; loud noise level and vibration.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop; kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear
• Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
