Job Title: Environmental Services Technician

Responsibilities
- Clean and sanitize wards, rooms, baths, restrooms, and offices; mop floors; dust furniture and equipment; clean window sills; empty trash baskets; arrange furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion; scour and polish sinks, mirrors; replenish supplies of soap and towels; polish and clean doors and windows; keep utility storage rooms clean and organized.
- Select cleaning materials and supplies, prepare solutions according to procedures, load the service cart, and transport it to work areas.
- Clean and sanitize rooms, including bathrooms, nursing stations, lounges, and offices, arranging furniture and equipment in an orderly manner.
- Wash furniture, tiles, fixtures, mirrors, and equipment with germicidal solutions; notify supervisor of any equipment that requires repair.
- Dry dust and wet mop halls and stairwells.
- Replenish hand soap, hand sanitizer, deodorizers in dispensers, and paper products.
- Empty regular trash in wastebaskets and dispose of biohazardous waste in the prescribed manner.
- Change sharps containers when full and dispose of them in the prescribed manner.
- Vacuum all carpeted areas; disinfect handrails in hallways daily.
- Change cubicle curtains on a scheduled basis or as needed; notify supervisor of windows that need cleaning or repair.
- Clean and sanitize patient rooms after discharge according to Terminal Cleaning Procedures.
- Clean and sanitize operating suites daily using prescribed cleaning solutions and procedures.
- Clean storage rooms weekly and utility rooms daily.
- Clean beds in the ER if they become grossly soiled; otherwise ER staff handle monthly cleaning of ER beds.
- Clean floor, desk, and ceiling fans as needed.
- Clean elevator components: handrails, doors, control panels, walls, and floor.
- Remove spider webs from overhead windows in the Annex area and other specified areas.
- Perform project cleaning tasks such as cove base cleaning, wastebasket cleaning, high dusting, wall washing, door frame cleaning, vent cleaning, window and blind cleaning, and ceiling cleaning in specified areas.
- Document daily cleaning and sanitizing activities in a monthly cleaning chart, noting the time each room or area was cleaned.
- Document terminal cleaning of patient rooms on a discharge cleaning form, including start and end times and initials of the chart.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit, stand, walk, squat, bend, twist, kneel, and push carts.
- Must be able to climb a ladder and work with dexterity while on a ladder.
- Physical strength to perform lifting tasks:
- Floor to waist – 40 pounds
- 14in. to waist – 50 pounds
- Waist to shoulder – 35 pounds
- Shoulder to overhead – 10 pounds
- Carry 40 pounds for 30ft.
- Push 40 pounds for 30ft.
- Pull 40 pounds for 30ft.
- Carry 40 pounds away from body for 30ft.
Reporting Relationship
Reports to the Environmental Services Director.
Qualifications
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.
- Previous EVS experience is desirable but not essential.
- Complete an EVS competency test within 90 days of hire via Healthstream and renew annually.
Infection Exposure Risk Level
Category II – Minimal risk. This job may expose you occasionally or in an emergency situation to blood, body fluids, or tissue. Hepatitis B vaccine will be provided.
Working Conditions
- Work in a fast‑paced environment with potentially hazardous chemicals.
- Clean and disinfect rooms/areas with exposure to patients, visitors, nursing staff, and doctors.
- Work in confined areas such as janitor’s closets with hazardous chemicals.
- Operate under time constraints to meet turn‑around times after patient discharges or transfers.
- In emergency cases, sanitize areas promptly and efficiently.
