Job description

Summary / Objective

The position of a CDL Operator undertakes various transporting duties and responsibilities, including transporting machinery or work tools to client work sites. A CDL Operator will perform work as required to maximize the quality of the company while maintaining the specified expectations of the client and ensuring a safe working environment. All company business will be conducted in accordance with company policies and procedures, and the operator will maintain professionalism throughout all business dealings, both internally and externally.

Essential Functions
  • Inspect truck and trailer for defects and safe operating conditions before, during, and after each trip.
  • Submit driver logs as required and write reports on the condition of the truck/trailer at the end of each trip or tour of duty as necessary.
  • Check shipping documents to determine the nature of the load and verify accuracy.
  • Install and remove tire chains as required by weather conditions.
  • Drive truck/trailer to and from designated destinations following all local, state, and DOT laws and rules.
  • Apply knowledge of commercial driving and skills in maneuvering the vehicle at varying speeds in difficult situations such as heavy traffic and inclement weather.
  • Be able to operate equipment in all types of weather and conditions, including moving forward and backing up long distances, around corners, and in and around very tight areas.
  • Report all accidents and incidents involving drivers or company equipment according to company procedures and policies.
  • Report highway safety hazards noted along the route.
  • Promptly report any delays due to breakdowns, weather or traffic conditions, or other emergencies, or in the event of irregularities relating to pickup or delivery of cargo.
  • Safely and legally operate commercial motor vehicle(s).
  • Follow all company safety, quality control/quality assurance procedures, DOT and OSHA guidelines.
  • Maintain poise and focus under time constraints and adverse conditions.
  • Attend and complete trainings as required by the company and client.
  • Pass all required drug/alcohol testing and background requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will have some supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a petrochemical/refinery environment. Exposure to cold working conditions during winter months and hot working conditions during the summer months. Exposure to noise requires wearing hearing protection or frequently shouting to be heard above ambient noise. In an emergency situation, exposure to hazardous chemicals may occur, and the use of a respirator is required. All employees will be required to be fit tested for the various respirators used and successfully pass a pulmonary function test (PFT).

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position of a driver can be extremely physical at times. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required, and for long periods of time, to bend, stoop, walk, climb, squat, reach, kneel, push/pull, stand, sit, and use hand strength and dexterity. A driver will frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift more than 51 pounds. Must be able to work at heights and climb ladders and stairways and work off platforms. Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the US Department of Transportation. Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours. Must be able to climb ladders located on units and customer locations and climb on all types of equipment at loading and delivery sites as required.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full‑time position. Typical days and hours of work are variable/project dependent. Overtime work is common and may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

Travel is expected. Extensive travel throughout the U.S. and overnight stays for extended periods of time.

Required Education And Experience

High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years’ driving experience in DOT regulated vehicles. Must hold a Class “A” or “B” driver’s license and a clean MVR. Must have previous commercial driving experience or have graduated from an accredited commercial driving school. Must have the ability to read maps and road signs, maintain a record of duty status, etc. Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, Hours of Service, inspection, and maintenance. Strong understanding of the oil & gas industry and required knowledge of quality system standards. Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
