Job summary

Rivian is seeking an experienced propulsion drive controls engineer to develop and integrate motor control features for electric vehicles in Carson, CA. You will work with controls and embedded software teams to test, validate and optimize inverter and motor control software across vehicle domains.

The role requires 5+ years in EV, hands‑on testing in high‑voltage labs, and expertise in AC drives, MATLAB/Simulink modeling, and C/C++. Domestic and international travel up to 30% will be necessary.

Qualifications

• M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years EV industry experience or equivalent.
• Hands‑on testing in vehicle test environments and high‑voltage lab settings.
• Knowledge of AC electric machine drives and three‑phase switching power converters.
• Extensive data logging experience and familiarity with CAN tools.
• Fluency with MATLAB/Simulink for modeling and simulation of electric drives.
• Experience developing digital control algorithms for three‑phase converters and AC machines.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 30%.
• Fluency in C and C++ programming, strong teamwork and autonomy.

Responsibilities

• Test and verify motor controls and inverter software features across vehicle domains.
• Lead vehicle testing and integration activities.
• Maintain fleet health; trace software, mechanical, and electrical issues.
• Develop and test motor control algorithms for high‑power drive systems.
• Perform system and subcomponent validation testing per specs and docs.
• Conduct software regression and release testing for inverter control algorithms.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams across development, diagnostics and service.
• Provide feedback to feature owners using test data analysis.
• Support vehicle test trips for cold and hot weather.
• Stay updated on new technologies and Rivian IP opportunities.
