Job summary

BUCH Co. is seeking an Estimator to gather and analyze detailed cost information for preconstruction projects in the Fulton, MD area.

You will visit jobsites, review proposals and plans, and work with Project Managers to coordinate bids and control costs. The role requires a degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management (or related field), strong analytical and communication skills, and proficiency with MS Office, Bluebeam, SmartBid, and On Screen Takeoff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Organized and detail oriented with strong time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office, Bluebeam, SmartBid, and On Screen Takeoff with ability to learn industry tools.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate proposals, specifications, and construction documents to understand the project as a whole.
  • Coordinate the bid process with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Estimate time, labor, materials, and product costs for construction projects.
  • Produce written proposals, cost estimates, budgets, and updates for clients and project managers.
  • Visit construction sites to gather client information and requirements.
  • Provide accurate quantity takeoff information for detailed material lists and costs.
  • Follow up with clients on submitted proposals and budgets.

Description

The Estimator is responsible for gathering, analyzing, and preparing detailed cost information to maximize cost-effectiveness during the preconstruction process. The Estimator will visit jobsites to gather necessary information, analyze proposals, specifications, and construction documents to thoroughly understand the project. The Estimator will work closely with Project Managers to coordinate and oversee the bid process. The Estimator then determines the time, labor, construction materials, and product costs for projects and communicates these requirements to clients.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Evaluate proposals, specifications, and construction documents to understand the project as a whole
  • Work closely with the construction project manager to oversee and coordinate the bid process for vendors and subcontractors
  • Estimate time, labor, construction materials, and product costs to determine overall cost for construction projects
  • Produce written proposals, cost estimates, budgets, and updates for clients and project managers
  • Visit construction sites to obtain necessary client requirement information
  • Provide accurate quantity takeoff information to provide a detailed list of materials and assess the total construction costs
  • Follow up with clients on submitted proposals and budgets

Requirements
Qualifications & Required Skills

The Estimator should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or at a minimum, an Associate’s Degree in Construction Management, or a related field or equivalent field experience.

The Estimator should be organized and detail oriented, with an ability to properly manage their time by prioritizing tasks. They should be analytical and possess critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They should possess strong communication skills, both verbal and writing, and be able to interact and collaborate with coworkers, clients, and outside vendors. They should be self-motivated and committed.

The Estimator should be proficient, or capable of becoming proficient, in various software applications including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint), Bluebeam, SmartBid and On Screen Takeoff, etc., and have the capability to learn new software applications specific to the industry, such as those necessary for estimating and scheduling, as well as project management and project controls.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be aware of the physical demands of the construction industry and may be required to perform physical labor and other strenuous tasks necessary to the successful completion of projects. Candidates must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. They may be required to sit and stand for periods of time and travel significant distances in a given day. They must be capable of performing tasks that may require bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling. Candidates must have the ability to work in all weather conditions.
